A heavy Saturday led to a light Sunday, but there was still rankings-shaking action in the nine-game slate.
BAIOCCO CARRIES STANFORD
Stanford completed a regular-season sweep of USC on Sunday afternoon, but it wouldn’t have been possible without another crazy performance from Ali Baiocco.
Baiocco tied her own program record by scoring eight goals, including three in a six-goal run between the third and fourth quarters, in No. 18 Stanford’s 23-17 win in Los Angeles. Ashley Humphrey led Stanford with 11 points (four goals, seven assists). Annabel Frist scored four times for the Cardinal.
Madison Waters scored five times for No. 13 USC (9-3, 5-2 Pac-12). In topping USC for the second time this season, Stanford improved to 9-6 (7-2 Pac-12).
The teams jockeyed for control for the first 20 minutes of action, and Waters put USC ahead 9-5 with 11:01 left in the second quarter. Baiocco then spearheaded a 7-0 Stanford run, scoring four times and putting Stanford ahead 12-9 with 1:23 left before halftime. Maddie Dora got one back for USC with 13 seconds left before the break, making the score 12-10.
The early portion of the third quarter went back and forth, and USC remained down two goals until Stanford’s game-breaking 6-0 run that spanned more than eight minutes between the third and fourth quarters. Baiocco’s score put the Cardinal ahead 22-14 with 10:21 to play.
She tied her single-game program record with the game’s final tally. Her 47th goal of the spring made the score 23-17 with 1:49 remaining.
UMASS TOP TEAM IN A10
Maddy Moloney, Kelly Marra and Kendra Harbinger combined for 10 goals in UMass’ biggest win of 2022, a 15-9 win over No. 17 Richmond in which the Minutewomen never trailed.
Harbinger assisted Marra with 8:23 left in the second quarter for a 4-3 UMass lead, then Marra found Alex Finn to make it 5-3. Richmond continued to keep it close, but UMass led from there. UMass (12-2, 6-0 A10) is now the No. 1 team in the Atlantic 10.
Richmond (11-3, 5-1 A10) got two goals each from Colleen Quinn and Lindsey Frank, but the Spiders were unable to overcome UMass’ potent trio. Gina Carroll was a force on the defensive side, making 11 saves for UMass.
UMass held a 17-10 draw advantage and forced Richmond into 15 turnovers.
