No KO. No Murphy. No problem.

No. 5 Stony Brook looked every bit the juggernaut in a 15-5 season-opening win Friday over No. 15 Colorado. Taryn Ohlmiller scored three goals and added five assists for an eight-point effort in her first game back from ACL surgery.

The duel between two All-American caliber goalies did not disappoint. Stony Brook’s Anna Tesoriero made 14 saves, including several one-on-one stops, while Colorado’s Julia Lisella finished with 13 stops.

But the Seawolves had too much firepower. Ohlmiller, the younger sister of all-time leading scorer Kylie Ohlmiller, went down with a torn ACL in Stony Brook’s win over Penn in the NCAA tournament last spring. Her injury was felt as the Seawolves fell short against Boston College in the quarterfinals. She returned with a vengeance, factoring in seven of Stony Brook’s first nine goals.

The Seawolves raced out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back — a welcome start for a team looking to replace not only Kylie Ohlmiller, but also Courtney Murphy. The duo smashed nearly every NCAA scoring record during their time at Stony Brook. Ohlmiller owns marks for career points and assists, while Murphy ranks atop the all-time leaders for career goals.

Siobhan Rafferty and Ally Kennedy also scored hat tricks in the Seawolves’ win Friday, the first of their two games this weekend in Colorado. They’ll face upstart Denver, unbeaten and ranked No. 12 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Division I Women’s Top 20, at Peter Barton Stadium on Sunday.

Irish Remain Unbeaten

Andie Aldave broke her own school record with 16 draw controls and Maddie Howe tied a Notre Dame record with 12 points on six goals and six assists, as the No. 14-ranked Fighting Irish improved to 4-0 with an impressive 19-10 victory Friday over previously unbeaten Ohio State.

Notre Dame trailed 5-4 midway through the first half before ripping off an 8-1 run stretching into the second stanza. Seventeen of the Irish’s 19 goals were assisted, setting a program record.
