Just two days after then-unranked UMass defeated then-No. 5 Boston College, yet another team in the top five of the Nike/US Lacrosse Top 20 has fallen.

Against Syracuse, the No. 2 team in the ranking with immense expectations for the 2020 season, No. 12 Stony Brook never trailed in the second half and secured a 17-16 upset.

A 9-2 run to open the second half put Stony Brook in good position to win, though Syracuse battled back. Emily Hawryschuk scored four of her six goals in a game-ending 7-1 run for the Orange, but Stony Brook won the final draw and Ally Kennedy (four goals, three assists) ran out the remaining 1:04.

Tied at 7 after the first half, the game became a wild one. Taryn Ohlmiller (six goals, two assists) and Jesse Arline (two goals, one assist) gave Stony Brook (1-0) a 9-7 lead before Syracuse (1-1) answered with tallies from defender Ella Simkins and Meaghan Tyrrell.

Stony Brook then ripped off seven unanswered to go ahead 16-9, forcing Syracuse coach Gary Gait to pull goalkeeper Asa Goldstock in favor of Hannah Van Middelem. Goldstock was the victim of a wicked behind-the-back goal by freshman Kailyn Hart that made it 14-9.

While Stony Brook was rolling, goalkeeper Kameron Halsall — Stony Brook’s Rutgers transfer — made several of her 10 saves.

Stony Brook next plays at home against Ohio State on Saturday. Syracuse hosts Albany on Saturday.
