A promising start to the 2018 season took another blow for No. 16 Duke as the Blue Devils were dominated in a 15-5 loss at home to Stanford on Friday afternoon.
The Blue Devils won their first three games of the season, including a 9-8 win over Northwestern, but were dominated in the first half before falling to Virginia Tech 17-14 last weekend. Duke trailed 10-3 at the half in that game and found similar rough going early on Friday as the Cardinal led 10-2 at the break.
On the flip side, Stanford posted its second straight win after opening the season with losses to Denver and Stony Brook.
Senior goalie Allie DaCar helped key the win for the Cardinal, making 12 saves, including nine in the first half as Stanford took control.
After the team’s traded goals in the opening three minutes, Stanford scored seven straight goals, holding Duke scoreless for more than 21 minutes before Duke freshman Charlotte North ended the drought.
North’s goal did little to stem Stanford’s momentum as the Cardinal scored the game’s next six goals, holding Duke scoreless over a 23-minute period that stretched into the second half.
A pair of freshman attackers from New Jersey led the Stanford offense with Ali Baiocco and Galen Lew combining for eight goals. Baiocco had five goals and Lew had three goals and an assist.
North led Duke with a hat trick. The Blue Devils did not have an assist on any of their five goals.
