Spencer Rees continues to make the most of his opportunity starting for No. 13 Navy this spring.
The senior goalie, who before this season saw a combined 61 minutes of game action spread over the previous three years, shined on senior day. In his first appearance against Army in the historic rivalry, Rees made a career-best 19 saves, including 14 in the second half, to stifle the Black Knights’ offense in a 9-4 win.
It was the fewest goals Army scored in a game since April 30, 2017. For his performance, Rees is the US Lacrosse Division I Men’s Player of the Week.
“He has command because of his calming presence,” Navy second-year head coach Joe Amplo said earlier this month in a US Lacrosse Magazine feature story about Rees.
The performance moved Rees’ save percentage up to .607, good for third-highest in Division I among goalies who have played more than one game. Navy (5-2, 4-1 Patriot League) concludes its regular season this weekend at Lafayette before taking on Loyola in the Patriot League quarterfinals on May 4.
