The Virginia women are beginning to boast one of the better one-two punches in the ACC, even if their names aren’t exactly of the household variety — yet.

Annie Dyson and Ashlyn McGovern scored three goals each Saturday afternoon, leading the No. 7 Cavaliers to a 12-10 win over No. 18 Virginia Tech. Kiki Shaw scored twice, while both Mackenzie Hoeg and Taylor Regan had two assists.

Hoeg fed McGovern to open the scoring just 25 seconds into the contest, but Virginia Tech’s Sarah Lubnow answered a few minutes later. The sides traded tallies until Whitney Liebler and Paige Tyson scored consecutive goals for the Hokies, putting them ahead 4-3.

Hoeg fed McGovern again with 15:58 left in the first half, giving UVA a 6-5 lead. After Emma Crooks tied the score nearly five minutes later, Virginia took a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Shaw, Maggie Bostain and McGovern each scored in a 10-minute span between the end of the first half and the very beginning of the second, pitting Virginia to a 9-6 advantage.

Virginia (3-0) saw its largest lead when Dyson scored her third of the game with 10:23 remaining, pushing the lead to 12-8.

Charlie Campbell made 11 saves, and Virginia held a 17-8 advantage on draws — led by eight from Dyson and four from Meredith Chapman.

Richmond Survives Scare

With less than 13 minutes left in Saturday’s contest against William and Mary, No. 12 Richmond — perhaps unexpectedly — found itself in a tie game.

But the Spiders recovered, as Lindsey Frank kickstarted a four-goal run with three consecutive goals in a two-minute span. Richmond (2-1) hung on for a 14-11 win.

Sabrina Schrader fed Sophie Lopec with 1:56 left to bring William and Mary within a pair at 13-11, but Madison Ostrick iced the game 33 seconds later.

Frank scored five goals, and Ostrick scored three. Four players scored twice for William and Mary (1-2) — Kathleen Cozzi, Belle Martire, Sarah Cipolla and Anne Milwicz. Elsa Rall made 12 saves for W&M.
