Freshman Sophie Whiteway scored with 32 seconds remaining to keep No. 9 Princeton unbeaten with a 12-11 victory at Penn State on Saturday afternoon.

After falling behind early, Penn State scored six straight goals, bridging halftime, to take an 8-7 lead early in the third quarter. Princeton answered with three straight goals, but the Nittany Lions stayed close, tying the game with 1:41 to play on Regan Taylor’s goal.

Marge Donovan then won the next draw to set up Whiteway’s heroics. Starting a free position shot on the left wing, Whiteway drove to the middle in heavy traffic and bounced home the game-winner.

Penn State had a final chance after Meghan Murray won the final draw, but Kristin O’Neill’s free position attempt with 14 seconds remaining went wide.

Junior Kate Mulham had a career-high four goals to lead the Princeton offense and Sam Fish was clutch with 13 saves. The Tigers are now 6-0 this season and will play at unbeaten Loyola on Wednesday night.

O’Neill led the Nittany Lions (5-3) with four goals, Murray had three and Ashley Bowan made 10 saves.

No. 5 Syracuse Dominates No. 18 Virginia Tech

No. 18 Virginia Tech scored the first two goals of the game, but No. 4 Syracuse quickly recovered and dominated the Hokies 17-5. The Orange improve to 7-2 overall and are a perfect 4-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

After falling behind, Syracuse went on a 13-1 run, holding the Hokies scoreless for a span of more than 34 minutes.

Megan Carney had a team-high eight points (3g, 5a) for the Orange, Emily Hawryschuk had a team-high five goals and Meaghan Tyrrell had seven points (4g, 3a).

Whitney Liebler and Sarah Lubnow each had two goals for Virginia Tech (7-4, 2-2) which came into the game riding a five-game winning streak.

No. 4 Northwestern Lights Up Ohio State

No. 4 Northwestern scored 22 goals, its second-highest total of the season, in a 22-14 victory over Big Ten rival Ohio State.

Lauren Gilbert had a game-high seven points (5g, 2a) and was one of eight players with multiple goals for the Wildcats (6-2, 1-0 Big Ten). Hannah Johnson and Samantha Smith each had hat tricks.

Jamie Level led Ohio State (6-4, 0-1 Big Ten), which saw a three-game winning streak stopped, with four goals and an assist and Jamie Lasda also scored three times.
 

Quick Start Leads No. 8 Loyola Over Lehigh

Eighth-ranked Loyola outscored Lehigh 8-0 in the opening quarter, routing its Patriot League rival 15-7. Loyola scored the game’s first nine goals before Lehigh finally scored more than 20 minutes into the contest.

Sam Fiedler had three goals and two assists and Georgia Latch had two goals and three assists to lead the Loyola offense. Kaitlyn Larsson made 10 saves to earn the win for Loyola, which remains undefeated at 7-0 and won its Patriot League opener.

Gabby Schneider had five assists for Lehigh.

Notable

  • Julia Gorajek continued her breakout sophomore season with a career-high six goals as Army won its seventh straight game, beating Holy Cross 21-10. Gorajek now has 30 goals for the season and has scored at least four goals in five of the Black Knights last six games.

  • No. 17 Navy outscored Bucknell 7-0 in the opening quarter and went on to a 15-3 win over the Bison in Mids' Patriot League opener. Reagan Roelefs had three goals and three assists for Navy (7-1, 1-0 PL).

  • Krissy Kowalski made a career-high 17 saves as Penn shut down Georgetown 10-7. Keeley Block scored five of Penn’s final six goals to help the Quakers win despite going scoreless for the final 19-plus minutes of the game. Block’s fifth goal gave Penn a 10-3 lead with 4:53 left in the third quarter. Georgetown scored the game’s final four goals, the last coming from Ali Diamond with 2:02 remaining.

  • Belle Martire tied a William & Mary school record with six assists and her nine points helped power the Tribe to a 20-15 win over Campbell. Freshman goalie Elise Palmer made a career-high 19 saves in the win.

  • Claire Bockstie had a career-high eight goals and Dymin Gerow scored seven as UMBC poured it on in a 25-15 victory over Robert Morris. UMBC has scored at least 20 goals in three of its five victories this season.
