Last weekend, it was Florida on the positive end of a ranking-shaking upset. This weekend, the Gators were on the other end.
No. 14 Loyola blitzed No. 2 Florida with nine unanswered goals spanning roughly 24 minutes, and Sam Fiedler totaled seven goals and one assist in Loyola’s 17-6 win in Gainesville. Livy Rosenzweig had three goals and three assists, and Kaitlyn Larsson made 11 saves.
Grace Haus’ unassisted goal with 6:28 left in the first half put the Gators within striking distance at 7-4. About two minutes later, Fiedler scored in a player-up situation, igniting the game-changing 9-0 run. She scored four of her seven goals during the spurt.
Loyola (3-0) was efficient, scoring 17 times on 25 shots on goal. In the second half, Florida took just four shots on goal (eight shots total).
Florida (2-1) was the biggest climber in last week’s Nike/US Lacrosse Division I Women’s Top 20 after defeating then-No. 2 Maryland, but the young team suffered a hiccup against the Greyhounds.
SYRACUSE SURGES PAST NORTHWESTERN
A game of runs finished in Syracuse’s favor, as the seventh-ranked Orange scored eight goals in the final 19 minutes to defeat sixth-ranked Northwestern 16-11 at Ryan Fieldhouse in Evanston, Ill., the second straight week in which an ACC team took down the Wildcats at home.
Emily Hawryschuk scored six goals, including five in the second half. Meaghan Tyrrell added five goals and an assist for the Orange (4-1), who relinquished a four-goal lead in the last four minutes of the first half and trailed 10-8 early in the second half before their offensive outburst.
Northwestern (3-2), which lost to Notre Dame in the same venue last week, was held to 12 goals fewer than its season average.
UNC TOPPLES MARYLAND
Scottie Rose Growney scored a career-high six goals and Jamie Ortega chipped in four goals and three assists as No. 1 North Carolina easily handled No. 5 Maryland, 19-6.
