Katie Cronin scored a career-high five goals as Duke upset No. 13 Virginia, 16-11, its first win over its Atlantic Coast Conference rival since 2016.
It was Duke’s first win over a ranked team since upsetting Notre Dame in the ACC quarterfinals a year ago as the Blue Devils (5-3, 1-1 ACC) had lost all three games against ranked opponents this season.
Duke dominated two key areas of the game – the draw and goaltending.
Duke had a 22-6 advantage on draws, led by Maddie Jenner with nine draw controls, and Blue Devil goalie Chase Henriquez made a season-high 13 saves.
Virginia, which has now lost three of its last four and trailed in the second half against George Mason on Wednesday, jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, but trailed for good after Cronin’s goal with 39 seconds left in the first half gave Duke a 6-5 halftime lead.
Cronin also played a key role in the second half for Duke. Sammy Mueller scored for Virginia to cut a Duke lead to 8-7 with 21:50 remaining, but Duke then scored the next four goals — two of them by Cronin — to take control.
Mueller and Taylor Regan each scored three goals for Virginia (5-3, 0-2 ACC).
Notre Dame Passes Another Test, Beats BC
No. 2 Notre Dame is 6-0 for the second straight year, but things seem a little different in South Bend this year.
The Irish actually opened last season 9-0, but only one of those nine games was against a ranked opponent — Virginia — and Notre Dame’s season ended quietly with three losses in its final four games.
This year’s 7-0 start includes a win over Midwest rival Northwestern and now a pair of ACC wins after the Irish put together a sterling defensive effort in an 11-7 victory over No. 17 Boston College on the heels of a win over Duke.
Notre Dame junior goalie Bridget Deehan, a first-year starter out of Georgia high school power Milton, made 11 saves and the Irish defense helped harass Boston College into 19 turnovers. BC scored just four goals through the game’s first 57 minutes.
Savannah Buchannan was a factor all over the field for Notre Dame, finishing with five ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers.
Andie Aldave scored three of Notre Dame’s first four goals and her goal with 1:03 left in the first half gave the Irish a 4-3 lead that they never relinquished.
BC trailed just 5-4 with 20:23 to play following a Cara Urbank goal, but Notre Dame freshman Madison Ahern scored less than two minutes later. It was the first of five straight Notre Dame goals over the next 16 minutes.
Aldave’s three goals led Notre Dame. Ahern scored twice and Maddie Howe had a goal and three assists.
Urbank scored twice for the Eagles (3-3, 0-1 ACC) and Rachel Hall made 10 saves.
