The Ivy League started Saturday with five of the top 12 teams in the Nike/USA Lacrosse rankings, but the league’s depth doesn’t end there. Brown stunned No. 8 Penn 12-10 at Franklin Field on Saturday to add more chaos to the league standings.
The Quakers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the opening quarter, but Brown scored seven times in the second quarter to knot the game at 7 at halftime.
With the game tied at 8 midway through the third quarter, Brown’s Devon McLane scored back-to-back goals to give the Bears the lead for good. McLane’s fourth goal of the game helped wrap things up. Down by one goal, Penn’s Sam Handley took an outside shot that was blocked by the stick of Brown’s Trevor Yeboah-Kodie. Yeboah-Kodie picked up the groundball to start a fast break opportunity and he fed McLane for the insurance goal.
Ryan Aughavin and Reed Moshyedi each added two goals and two assists for Brown (6-4, 1-2 Ivy) and Connor Theriault made 13 saves. Dylan Gergar had three goals for Penn (4-4, 1-3) and Patrick Burkinshaw made 17 saves.
Jacksonville Takes Control of SoCon
A season of breakthroughs added another key milestone as Jacksonville beat Southern Conference rival Richmond for the first time ever, defeating the Spiders 13-11. Richmond, which has either won or finished as the runner-up every year since the SoCon began sponsoring men’s lacrosse in 2015, had won the previous eight meetings against Jacksonville.
The Dolphins (10-2, 2-0 SoCon), who beat 2021 SoCon champion High Point last weekend, built up a 13-6 lead late in the third quarter and needed that cushion after a sloppy close to the game. Jacksonville went scoreless in the final quarter while committing seven turnovers.
Jacksonville goalie Luke Millican kept Richmond at bay, making 10 saves overall and three in the final quarter.
Tyler Corpora, a graduate transfer from Hartford, stepped up in a big way for Jacksonville, scoring four goals. His fourth came with 43 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give the Dolphins a seven-goal cushion. Max Waldbaum and Ethan LaMond each scored twice for Jacksonville.
Richmond (6-4, 1-1), coming off of an upset over then No. 2 Virginia last weekend, was led by Ryan Lanchbury with four goals and two assists. Luke Frankeny added three goals and Jared Chenoy won 17 of 26 faceoffs. Zach Vigue made 14 saves.
Notre Dame Outguns Duke
No. 15 Notre Dame led from start to finish in a 16-15 victory over Duke, evening the Irish’s record at 4-4 while moving to 2-1 in the ACC. Duke was unable to build off the momentum of a blowout win over North Carolina last weekend, losing for the third time in the last five games to fall to 9-5, 1-2.
Notre Dame led 7-3 after the opening quarter, forcing the Blue Devils to play catch up the rest of the way. Jake Naso’s goal with 5:44 left in the second quarter pulled Duke to within 8-7, but the Irish scored three goals in the final four minutes of the first half.
Duke got to within one goal again late in the third quarter, trailing 13-12 after an Owen Caputo goal capped a three-goal rally, but Notre Dame again had an answer with Wheaton Jackoboice scoring with 10 seconds left in the quarter.
Notre Dame pushed the lead to three goals again in the third quarter before Duke closed the scoring on goals by Reed Landin (4:16) and Brennan O’Neill (0:08).
Pat Kavanagh led the Irish offense with seven points (3g, 4a) and Jackoboice also had a hat trick. O’Neill and Nakeie Mongomery each had three goals and two assists for Duke.
Virginia Turns to Defense, Beats UNC
With All-American attackman Matt Moore sidelined, No. 5 Virginia’s offense took a while to get going, but the Cavaliers defense was more than up to the task in an 11-4 win over No. 14 North Carolina.
Freshman goalie Matt Nunes made 13 saves while allowing just four goals and the Cavaliers forced North Carolina into 17 turnovers. North Carolina led 2-1 after the opening quarter, but scored just one goal in the final 37 minutes of the game.
Payton Cormier led Virginia (8-2, 4-0 ACC) with four goals, including back-to-back tallies in the last 2:26 of the first half to help give the Cavaliers momentum and a 6-3 halftime lead. Griffin Schutz and Evan Zinn each scored twice for Virginia and Jeff Conner had a goal and three assists.
Chris Gray led North Carolina (7-4, 0-3) with three goals.
