In its Red Bandanna Game honoring Welles Crowther, Boston College’s high-octane offense was put to the test. In a rare occurrence this season for the blistering Eagles, they were facing a team that could keep up with its offensive output.
Duke had the upper hand early, leading by as much as three goals in the first half before taking a one-goal lead into halftime. But Boston College scored the first four goals of the second half, and although Duke would continually push closer, the Eagles held on from there.
Charlotte North scored six goals in her first game against her former team since transferring to BC in 2019, and No. 6 Boston College topped No. 8 Duke 17-15.
Cara Urbank gave Boston College (8-1, 3-1 ACC) the lead for good at 10-9 just over five minutes into the second half, and she scored again four minutes later to make the score 11-9. Jenn Medjid’s 29th goal of the season made the score 12-9 less than a minute after that.
Duke (6-5, 2-5 ACC) was far from done, as the Blue Devils twice cut the lead to just one goal. Catherine Cordrey’s 20th tally of the year made the score 16-15 with 4:01 remaining, but North scored the put away goal 59 seconds later.
VIRGINIA NEARLY FINISHES COMEBACK
Elsewhere in the wild world of the ACC, Notre Dame led by six goals with 17:44 remaining before Virginia awakened to make it a game. The Cavaliers scored five straight over the next 11 minutes, but the Irish defense settled and locked in.
They held Virginia scoreless the rest of the way, and Keelin Schlageter scored a last-second goal to ice it, as No. 4 Notre Dame outlasted No. 7 Virginia 12-10.
With the score tied at 4, Notre Dame (6-2, 3-2 ACC) used a six-goal run to build its lead. Six players scored during the run — Kelly Donnelly, Jackie Wolak, Samantha Lynch, Kathleen Roe, Andie Aldave and Kasey Choma — to take a 10-4 lead with 19:13 remaining.
Not long after, Ashlyn McGovern scored three times in Virginia’s 5-0 run that closed the gap.
