Sam Apuzzo, the reigning Tewaaraton Award winner who has led Boston College to consecutive NCAA championship game appearances, has been named the Brine/US Lacrosse Division I Women’s Preseason Player of the Year, as featured in the January edition of US Lacrosse Magazine.
Apuzzo, a recent addition to the U.S. national team player pool, scored 88 goals and racked up 163 draw controls — both BC single-season records — en route to becoming the school’s first-ever national player of the year in 2018.
The Eagles are ranked No. 1 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Preseason Top 20 due in large part to a star-studded senior class that includes Apuzzo, reigning IWLCA Defender of the Year Elizabeth Miller, All-American midfielder Dempsey Arsenault and 2017 NCAA championship MVP Kenzie Kent.
Apuzzo, who started nine games as a freshman in 2016 before suffering a season-ending ACL injury, has roared back with consecutive record-setting seasons as a sophomore and junior — a torrid stretch during which she has averaged 3.5 goals, 5.2 points and 4.9 draw controls per game.
Apuzzo’s ascent has coincided with that of Boston College.
“It’s like this switch is flipped and we’re the hunted,” she said. “So now we have a certain swagger.”
