Sam Cioffi, a junior attackman for Division III Salem State, died Sunday after a medical emergency, the school announced.

The Marblehead, Mass., product had just set the single-season program goals record on Friday night, scoring three goals for a total of 55 in 16 games.

Salem State released the following statement regarding his death:

To Our Viking Community:

We are sad to share that we lost a member of our student athlete community over the weekend. Sam Cioffi, a member of our men's lacrosse team from Marblehead and Beverly Massachusetts, passed away after a medical emergency Sunday morning. Sam had just broken the single season goal record on Friday night in the team's final game, and was a finalist for the VESPY Award for Record Setting Performance of the Year.

Counseling Services are available in Athletics beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 2, 2022, and there will be a vigil for Sam on Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Alumni Field. Please join us in keeping Sam's family, teammates, coaches and friends in your thoughts. 

Tomorrow's celebration of our annual VESPY Awards will be postponed to a future date.
