On Friday, Maryland’s Matt Rambo was named one of the top five candidates for this year’s Tewaaraton Award by US Lacrosse Magazine. Today, the 5-foot-10, 210-pound senior attackman, matched his career high of four goals as the No. 6 Terps beat No.1 Penn State 15-11, handing the Nittany Lions their first loss of the season.

Rambo, who added two assists, scored three of the Terps first four goals of the game to help Maryland (7-2, 2-0 Big Ten) off to a fast start in a game in which it led wire to wire.

Penn State, which has been ranked No. 1 in the Nike/US Lacrosse rankings since March 13, had moved to the No. 1 spot in both the coaches and media polls this week. The Nittany Lions began the season riding its offense, but the defense had allowed just 20 goals combined in the last three games, including holding Ohio State to four goals in a 9-4 victory on Sunday night.

On Saturday, Penn State (10-1, 1-1 Big Ten) had no answers for Maryland’s offense. Junior midfielder Connor Kelly had four goals, senior attackman Colin Heacock had three and Jon Garino Jr. (9-of-11) and Austin Henningsen (11-of-19) controlled the faceoff battle, combining to win 20-of-30.

Maryland goalie Dan Morris, who has been solid all year, made zero saves in the first half, but the Terps still led it 10-6 at the break. Morris bounced back to make six saves in the second half.

Freshman attackman Mac O’Keefe led Penn State with three goals and Grant Ament added two goals and two assists. Colby Kneese made 10 saves.

Hofstra is the Final Unbeaten Team

Penn State’s loss opened the door for Hofstra to remain the last unbeaten Division I men’s lacrosse team and the Pride took advantage with an 11-9 win at Colonial Athletic Association rival Delaware. Two weeks ago, Delaware had handed Rutgers its first loss of the season.

Hofstra (10-0, 2-0 CAA) led 7-2 midway through the third quarter, but the Blue Hens made a game of it. Back-to-back goals in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter pulled Delaware (7-5, 0-2 CAA) to within 8-7, but Hofstra’s Josh Byrne scored at the 8:20 mark to start a mini three-goal run for Hofstra. Byrne also netted the last one with 2:11 left to put the game out of reach despite a couple of late goals from Delaware in the final two minutes.

Byrne led Hofstra with four goals and Jimmy Yanes also had three tallies. Jack Concannon, added to the Tewaaraton Watch list on Thursday, had nine saves for the win. Steve DeLargy and Andrew Romagnoli each had three goals for Delaware and Crosby Matthews won 14-of-21 faceoffs.

Streaking Duke Hands Notre Dame Second Straight Loss

No. 10 Duke won for the seventh time in its last eight games, handing No. 5 Notre Dame its second consecutive loss in the process. Jack Bruckner led the Blue Devils with four goals in the 11-8 victory.

Bruckner had three of his goals in the opening quarter, helping the Blue Devils (9-3, 2-1 ACC) to an early 5-3 lead. Bruckner’s goal at the 6:50 mark broke a 1-1 tie and Duke led for the remainder of the game.

“The first quarter was an emphasis all week,” said head coach John Danowski. “We practiced the first-quarter segment for 10-15 minutes every day just emphasizing three or four things we should focus on in that first quarter in order to help us be successful.”

Notre Dame (5-3, 1-2 ACC), which lost to Notre Dame last weekend, was led by Sergio Perkovic, Ryder Garnsey and Mikey Wynne with two goals each.

In other Top 20 games today:

• No. 4 Army West Point got goals from Conor Glancy and Cole Johnson in the final three minutes of the game to rally past Boston University 11-10. Glancy and Johnson each had two goals and two assists for Army. The Black Knights (10-1, 6-0 Patriot League) have won nine straight games and clinched a Patriot League semifinal berth.

• Freshman TD Irelan won 16-of-19 faceoffs and Conor Fields had three goals and three assists as No. 8 Albany beat UMBC 10-5.

• No. 11 Yale won its sixth straight game, blanking Dartmouth in the first half on the way to a 13-6 victory. Conor Mackie won 14-of-16 faceoffs.

• Gavin McBride became the first Princeton player to score at least five goals in four straight games as the No. 12 Tigers beat Stony Brook 13-11. Michael Sowers (3g, 1a) had four points to give him 55 for the season, tying Kevin Lowe's school record for a freshman.

• No. 13 Towson scored the first six goals of the game and stayed perfect in the Colonial Athletic Association with an 11-8 victory over Massachusetts.

• Mercer led No. 17 Richmond 7-6 at the half, but the Spiders shut out the Bears in the third quarter and posted a 12-9 victory. Benny Pugh made five of his 14 saves in the third quarter for the Spiders.

• Freshman Kieran Mullins had a career-high eight goals as No. 16 Rutgers downed No. 20 Michigan 14-7 in The Big House. Joe Francisco won 19-of-22 faceoffs for the Scarlet Knights.

• Brian Sherlock had five goals and Pat Spencer had a goal and six assists as No. 19 Loyola routed Lehigh 14-5.

Nike/US Lacrosse Division III Top 20 Scoreboard

The only upset among the Top in the Nike/US Lacrosse Division III rankings was a big one. Swarthmore downed No. 16 Gettysburg 10-8. It was the first victory for the Garnet over the Bullets since 1985. Swarthmore, which lost by just a goal to No. 17 Ursinus last weekend, got six goals from freshman Austin Chang and 13 saves from senior Cole Fox.
