When you talk about trailblazers in women’s lacrosse, several legends from the past will be named.

Among them are Pat Genovese, Tina Sloan Green, Caroline Hausserman, Kathy Heinze, Carole Kleinfelder, Gillian Rattray, Sue Stahl, Sue Tyler, Lanetta Ware, Marge Watson, and Judy Wolstenholme, who each began coaching college women’s lacrosse in the 1960s or 1970s. Before Title IX was passed in 1972, they all were instrumental in leading the effort to make it a varsity sport.

But one trailblazer, current Princeton coach Chris Sailer, who has been at the helm of the program for more than 30 years, has created a legacy of inspiring countless Tigers and pursuing equality for women in collegiate athletics. Under her leadership, Princeton has won three NCAA titles (1994, 2002, 2003) and has won more games in the NCAA tournament than any other coach.

Sailer, a 2008 National Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee, will be honored during the Princeton Invitational on Saturday at the US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md. The path surrounding Tierney Field will be named the Chris Sailer Trail and features each of the aforementioned trailblazers.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled that that is happening,” said Sailer, who played for Kleinfelder at Harvard. “It’s going to be such a great day for women’s lacrosse and the history of the game. I’m really excited for my team and my alums to learn about so many of the women who impacted me in my younger days and contributed so much to the game.”

Princeton will welcome Fairfield, the New York Athletic Club and Villanova this weekend to end its 2017 fall ball slate. All three teams features several Princeton alumni, including Stags head coach Laura Field and Wildcats head coach Julie (Shaner) Young.

The Tigers will get one last look at its 2018 roster, which just graduated All-American goalie Ellie DeGarmo and 2017 Tewaaraton finalist and England bronze medalist Olivia Hompe.

Senior attacker Colby Chanenchuk and sophomore midfielder Tess D’Orsi are next in line to take the reins on offense for Hompe, while senior keeper Mary Kate McDonough likely will fill DeGarmo’s shoes. However, Princeton has two other goalies vying for the starting spot this season in sophomore Winnie Brandfield-Harvey and freshman Sam Fish.

The Tigers' draw specialist Madeline Rodriguez also graduated, but junior midfielder Elizabeth George will be poised to take over.

Fans wishing to attend this weekend’s four-team tournament can enter free of charge.
