The PLL’s six inaugural rosters were crafted with competitive balance and chemistry in mind, given the consensus among players that they didn’t want to go through a draft at this point in their careers and there wouldn’t be a lot of time for team-building ahead of the start of the season.

“We wanted to put guys together that have been together in the past,” said Tom Schreiber, who was involved in early discussion about how team formation should proceed before taking himself out of the process to avoid any conflicts of interest.

Corey McLaughlin breaks down the Premier Lacrosse League’s six teams.

Archers Lacrosse Club

Coach: Chris Bates

Tom Schreiber leads the midfield. Utah’s entire assistant coaching staff of attackmen Marcus Holman and Will Manny, and goalie Adam Ghitelman are teammates. The transition game could be fun to watch when long pole Scott Ratliff crosses the midline. It’s easy to imagine him starting a break and Kevin Rice finishing it on the crease. It’s also nice to see goalie Drew Adams, who considered retiring a few years ago, still at it in the new league.

Atlas Lacrosse Club

Coach: John Paul

There’s a distinct I-95 feel to this team, with seven Hopkins alums — including league founder Paul Rabil, defenseman Tucker Durkin, midfielders Ryan Brown, Joel Tinney and John Crawley, and attackman Shack Stanwick — on a roster that also brings Long Island grit in d-middies Kevin Unterstein and Steve DeNapoli. Throw in another Long Islander, the Big Rig, goalie Scott Rodgers, and New Jersey native Trevor Baptiste, and that leaves Connor Buczek, an Ohio native, as an outlier.

Chaos Lacrosse Club

Coach: Andy Towers

The name fits this group, which is loaded with slick-sticked box veterans, Canadians and two of the Thompson brothers (Miles and Jeremy). Have fun watching Curtis Dickson, Josh Byrne, Austin Staats, Connor Fields, Joe Resitarits sling the ball around on attack, and Myles Jones and Deemer Class firing away from the midfield. Former Albany goalie Blaze Riorden will probably go coast-to-coast for a score at some point as well.

Chrome Lacrosse Club

Coach: Dom Starsia

This might be Duke coach John Danowski’s favorite team. There are nine former Blue Devils on the roster, including attackmen Jordan Wolf and Justin Guterding, defenseman Mike Manley, faceoff man Brendan Fowler and John’s son, Matt Danowski. Goalie John Galloway is a former Duke assistant. Denver coach Bill Tierney might sport some Chrome gear too, with former Pioneers Wes Berg and Connor Cannizzaro on the squad.

Redwoods Lacrosse Club

Coach: Nat St. Laurent

Former Brown star Kylor Bellestri and Long Islander Matt Kavanagh form a strong attack. The Redwoods have at least two all-star midfield lines: Joe Walters, Peter Baum, Kyle Harrison, Sergio Perkovic, Brent Adams, Sergio Salcido and JoJo Marasco. Oh, and then Greg Gurenlian getting them the ball and six former Notre Dame players implanting the Irish’s defensive ethos.

Whipsnakes Lacrosse Club

Coach: Jim Stagnitta

Maryland alums have dominated MLL draft classes over the last few years, so it’s not surprising to see so many in the PLL. But 20 former Terps on one team? How about them Hardshells? Like midfielders Drew Snider, Mike Chanenchuk and Connor Kelly, defenseman Michael Ehrhardt, the MVP of the 2018 world championship, faceoff guy Charlie Raffa, goalie Kyle Bernlohr, and attackman Matt Rambo. Former Tewaaraton winner Ben Reeves (Yale) and Jules Heningburg (Rutgers) will run on attack too.
