Unranked Notre Dame earned its second win against a Top 20 team with a thrilling 10-9 victory over No. 14 Duke thanks to Savannah Buchanan’s game-winning goal with just 31 seconds remaining. The Irish earned its first ranked win when they upset Syracuse 11-10 in overtime on March 24.
"Our team has shown a great amount of resilience as we continue to grow and continue find experience. Today I was really proud of them to stay with it, they had great resolve from start to finish. They stayed together, which was a key to our game. Savannah's goal was a snapshot of us staying together. Maddie Howe drew the shooting space and Savannah took advantage of a second-chance opportunity on a loose ball."
The Blue Devils opened the scoring five minutes in on Olivia Jenner’s tally, but that was their lone goal of the half.
The Irish responded with a six-goal run to lead 6-1, sparked by Buchanan and led by two from Howe.
Jenner again got the scoring started in the second half to ignite a four-goal Duke spurt to bring the score within one.
Howe then scored to take the Irish back up two, but the Blue Devils knotted it at seven three minutes later.
Jessi Masinko broke the tie, handing the lead back to the Irish, and Howe followed up with one more goal to make it 9-7 with 7:27 to play.
Duke again battled back, scoring back-to-back goals within 30 seconds of each other to tie it 9-9 with 3:03 remaining.
But it was Buchanan who rebounded the ball after Howe’s attempted shot was checked to score the game-winner as the clock neared zero.
Howe finished with a team-high four goals, while Masinko had three points and Buchanan scored two goals. Andie Aldave led in the midfielder with five draw controls, which was one more than Jenner’s tally. Jenner entered the game leading the nation in draw controls (115).
Notre Dame outshot Duke 25-21, the Blue Devils had an 11-10 advantage on the draw and it was an even 15-15 ground ball battle.
Whittle Breaks Adams’ Mark for Maryland Goals Record
With her 268th career goal at the 24:16 mark in the first half, senior captain Megan Whittle passed all-time great Jen Adams to become Maryland’s all-time goal leader in the Terps’ 20-5 rout of Ohio State.
“When I committed to Maryland, I always dreamed of this moment,” Whittle said.
“Incredibly happy for Megan Whittle on becoming our program’s all-time goals leader,” said Maryland coach Cathy Reese. “I’m proud to have been a part of her journey and been able to watch her grow from the beginning.”
Whittle finished with a hat trick in the dominant win. Caroline Steele led the way with seven points on five goals and two assists, while Kali Hartshorn had four goals and Jen Giles had four points. Meghan Siverson also added a hat trick.
Adams was quick to congratulate her fellow Terp on her accomplishment.
