SPARKS, Md. — No. 7 Notre Dame Prep (Md.) made history Friday night, ending No. 1 McDonogh's (Md.) national record 198-game winning streak by sending the Eagles to a 10-8 defeat in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship game before a standing-room only crowd at Tierney Field on the US Lacrosse campus here.

The Blazers got two goals apiece from Brooke Barger, Ellie Curry, and Caitlynn Mossman, and never trailed in becoming the first team to beat McDonogh since Canandaigua (N.Y.) did April 11, 2009. They avenged an overtime loss to the Eagles, suffered during the regular season.

“We had a quiet confidence. We played loose and like we had nothing to lose,” Mac Ford, coach of Notre Dame Prep, said. “Our defense played lights out.”

The Blazers looked sharp early and held McDonogh to a season-low in goals scored, withstanding a first-half buzzer beater by Maddie Jenner to gradually reassert control in the second half. Hannah Mardiney and Liza Reegan scored to key NDP's fast start, but after the Eagles tied it, they never got closer than one after halftime.

Julia Hoffman had a hat trick for McDonogh; the last of her three goals bringing her team within 9-8 with under seven minutes to play. The Eagles defense earned a turnover, but goalie Julia Cooper — who kept her team in the game — succumbed to a double team behind the cage and lost the ball out of bounds.

On the restart, Mossman fed Barger for an empty-netter to provide the final margin, which the Blazers preserved largely by moving goalie Vanessa Stamas above the restraining line in exchange for another field player to assist with keep-away efforts.

After NDP dethroned the nine-time defending champions, the Blazers celebrated multiple times in multiple locations with their adoring fans. They collected the championship trophy at midfield, emptied a water jug on Ford and wore shorts that read, "The streak starts today."

Perhaps, but few will forget the streak that they just ended.
