Northwestern’s Selena Lasota, who scored an NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse tournament single-game record nine goals in a first-round win over Richmond on Friday and followed that with an eight-goal performance in a second-round win at No. 7 seed Towson on Sunday, is the Brine/US Lacrosse Player of the Week.

Lasota easily could have shared this honor with Sheila Nesselbush, who finished with six and eight goals, respectively, as the Wildcats offense fired on all cylinders all weekend.

Just two games into the postseason, Lasota is already five goals away from the NCAA tournament record of 22 held by Northwestern’s Katrina Dowd, who took four games to set the mark in 2009.

After Emily Gillingham put Towson up 11-10 early in the second half Sunday, Lasota and Nesselbush combined to score the next five goals of the game. Lasota had three of the goals, including the goal that gave Northwestern a lead it would not relinquish.

“She’s the type of player that steps up when the pressure is at the highest,” said Northwestern head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller of Lasota. “It’s always awesome to have one of those types of players in your corner. She really carried us this weekend.”

The unseeded Wildcats will look to continue their torrid run against No. 2 seed North Carolina in the NCAA quarterfinals.
