In its first road game of the season, No. 1 Boston College avoided an upset scare from No. 10 Syracuse, coming back from a two-goal halftime deficit for the 14-12 victory in the Carrier Dome. 

Last year’s Tewaaraton winner Sam Apuzzo sealed the lead with the go-ahead goal at the 24:17 mark in the second half after Sheila Rietano brought the Eagles within one and Cara Urbank knotted it at 8. 

In a span of 10 minutes, Apuzzo took a tied game to a three-goal game in favor of the back-to-back NCAA runner-up on her own. She finished with a game-high nine points including seven goals, becoming the program’s all-time goal leader with 199 in her career. 

Senior goalie Lauren Daly also recorded a career-best 12 saves.

The Orange got a team-best four goals from Emily Hawryschuk, plus three points from Nicole Levy. 

Syracuse’s four-goal spurt in the first half was quickly silenced by a four-goal run for the Eagles spanning both halves, followed by a five-goal and then a three-goal run for Boston College in the second. 

Apuzzo had a hand in the final two BC goals of the game that secured the win – first an assist to Dempsey Arsenault for a 13-10 lead with 3:31 to play and lastly a goal assisted by Kenzie Kent to go up 14-10 with 1:49 on the clock.

"I give our team credit for not giving up," Syracuse coach Gary Gait said.

Colorado, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown Upset Top 20 Teams

While Boston College avoided the upset bid, No. 12 Loyola, No. 13 Virginia Tech and No. 14 Towson were hit by the bug. 

The Greyhounds and Tigers suffered losses to unranked foes – to Johns Hopkins 13-11 and Georgetown 10-7, respectively – while the Hokies dropped an 11-goal game to No. 20 Colorado, 17-6. 

Loyola jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead in the first 12 minutes, but the Blue Jays saw a game- and career-best four goals from sophomore Shelby Harrison to help secure the win. 

The Hoyas had a balanced five-goal performance in each half against the Tigers thanks to a team-high four points from Francesca Whitehurst and three goals from Taylor Gebhardt.

 “In the end, we didn't back down. We didn't worry. We didn't point fingers,” said Hoyas coach Ricky Fried. “We just rallied together.” 

In the ranked showdown, the Buffs had a strong showing after dropping its season opener against Florida, exploding for a 7-2 lead in the first 18 minutes and not allowing Virginia Tech to score five goals until midway through the second half. They finished with a four-goal run in the final 7:14, including two from Samantha Nemirov, who had a team-best five goals and six points. 

Georgetown and Johns Hopkins are now 2-0, while Colorado moves to 1-1.

Princeton Coach Sailer Reaches Milestone

Princeton started its 2019 campaign on a high note. 

With a 16-7 rout of Temple on their home turf, Tigers coach Chris Sailer recorded her 400th career victory.

Sailer became the first lacrosse coach – women's or men's – ever to win 400 games at one Division I school. She is the second Division I women’s coach to 400 wins, along with Navy coach Cindy Timchal, who also coached at Northwestern and Maryland. 

"This is a place I truly love," Sailer said. "This team has been my family and my baby. I've had amazing student-athletes and coaches here. It's been a lot of hard work, a lot of great players, a lot of big wins. I'm really happy to get it with this group. This is a very fun team."

The US Lacrosse Hame of Famer is also the fifth women's college coach to get there, joining three Division III coaches including TCNJ’s Sharon Pfluger, the all-time leader with 514. John Danowski, the current Duke coach who also coached at Hofstra, is the only men's coach to reach 400 wins in Division I.

Sailer is now 400-158 in her 33 seasons at Princeton, winning three NCAA championships, having 14 Ivy League championships and making 25 NCAA appearances.

“I try not to reflect on the personal piece,” Sailer said. “I'm just grateful to be a coach at Princeton. But yes. It's a very nice milestone."

Princeton’s win was highlighted by a six-goal performance from Tess D’Orsi and 11 saves from Sam Fish. Elizabeth George also tallied four points on two goals and two assists to reach 100 career points.
