USA Downs Great Britain to Finish USA Lacrosse Experience Unbeaten
INDIANAPOLIS — The United States women completed a perfect 3-0 weekend with a 22-9 victory over Great Britain in sixes competition at the USA Lacrosse Experience at Carroll Stadium on the campus of Indiana University Indianapolis.
Marie McCool scored on the opening possession of the game, but the U.S. offense didn’t generate much more offense in the quarter, leading just 3-2 after the first eight minutes.
“Great Britain was probably the most physical team that we played, and it took a minute for us to adjust to that,” said U.S. head coach Lindsey Munday. “ We’re the United States and you’re always getting everyone’s best shot. I’m really proud of the girls and the adjustments they made.”
The U.S. lead remained just one at 6-5 midway through the second quarter, but they then ripped off five straight goals and finished the quarter scoring nine times to take a 12-6 halftime lead.
“The runs can happen really fast and really quick,” Munday said of the sixes discipline. “The first and second quarters are going to be close against good teams. You have to be calm and composed and make sure you don’t have too many empty possessions.”
Charlotte North paced the U.S. offense with four goals and scored two goals and added an assist during the pivotal second quarter. Ally Kennedy and Ally Mastroianni each added three goals and two assists and Taylor Moreno helped shut down Great Britain’s offense in the second half, making eight saves while allowing just three goals.
Anna Neville led Great Britain with three goals and Sofia Wise added two. Dylan Whittington played the majority of game in goal and made 10 saves while allowing 13 goals.
This was the first competition for the U.S. team under Munday, a two-time world champion as a player with the U.S. program and also the head women’s lacrosse coach at the University of Southern California.
The U.S. women will continue training over the next year as they prepare for The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, China next August. That will mark the third time that women’s lacrosse has been contested as a medal sport at The World Games. The U.S. won the inaugural championship in 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland. The format switched to sixes in 2022 and Canada edged the United States in the championship game in Birmingham, Ala.
