Exciting Times as U.S. Women's Sixes Team Builds Towards Olympics

INDIANAPOLIS — Lindsey Munday has achieved the highest levels of the sport, winning two gold medals as a member of the U.S. women’s senior team. On Friday, she got to coach in her first game as the U.S. women’s sixes coach as the program builds towards the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

The U.S. women won both of their games at the USA Lacrosse Experience, knocking off Colombia 35-1 in its opener before pulling away from Puerto Rico 27-9 to close out the first day of action at Carroll Stadium on the Indiana University Indianapolis campus.

“It’s such an honor whenever you see the girls wearing the uniform and getting to play international competition in a real game,” Munday said. “It just ups the ante a little bit. It’s so fun and exciting to be here. You learn so much every single session, every single game. It’s just an exciting time.”

In Friday’s other women’s games, Great Britain was victorious twice – beating Puerto Rico 17-13 and Colombia 32-1. The U.S. and Great Britain will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday night. Tickets are still available and all games are being streamed on the USA Lacrosse YouTube channel.

The U.S. opened the tournament scoring two goals in the opening minute and never slowed up in its 35-1 win over Colombia. Ally Mastroianni and Marie McCool each scored five goals with McCool adding a pair of assists for a team-high seven points. Sam Apuzzo, Kenzie Kent and Charlotte North each added four goals while Taylor Moreno and Caylee Waters combined for eight saves.

In its second game, the U.S. only led Puerto Rico 5-3 after the opening quarter, but then ripped off five straight goals to open the second quarter and cruise to the win.

North had five goals while Kasey Choma and McCool each added four goals. Erin Coykendall had a goal and four assists. Moreno made seven saves in the second half and had three assists on outlet passes from her goalie position.

Bri Carrasquillo, Lucia Nash, Tori Rankin and Cecilia Vergara all scored two for Puerto Rico and Rachel Ramirez made 10 saves.

Earlier in the day, Carrasquillo scored to open the second half scoring and give Puerto Rico a 9-7 lead over Great Britain, but Great Britain responded in a major way, scoring 10 straight goals. Georgie Southorn scored three of those goals and led Great Britain with five goals. Torz Anderson added three goals and Lottie Robertson had two goals and two assists.

Carrasquillo, Nash and Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw all had three goals for Puerto Rico and Ramirez made 11 saves while allowing just eight goals in three quarters of action.

Great Britain had a much easier time in its second game, using relentless pressure to help generate offense – scoring 11 goals in the first quarter of a 32-1 win over Colombia.

Anderson had a team-high seven points on three goals and four assists while Olivia Wimpenny scored five times and Tilly Shires and Sofia Wise each scored four goals. Sienna Parekh made five saves in the win.
