On Saturday, Mount Olive announced the death of freshman Chaney Partrich from injuries sustained in a deadly car accident on March 13. The exercise science major was from Chapin, S.C.
Madison Mergl (Sayville, N.Y.) and Ann Wray (Oakland, N.J.) died just after the crash occurred, according to local officials. Jett Swetland, a senior baseball player, also died in the crash. Mount Olive encouraged "continued prayers" for Alex Eubanks, Tiffany Lee and Amber McCarthy, the three other women's lacrosse players injured in the collision.
All seven student-athletes were riding in a Jeep that reportedly ran a stop sign and was hit by an oncoming tractor trailer.
“It seems almost incomprehensible that in the past eight days, the University of Mount Olive has mourned the loss of four students,” UMO Interim President Dr. Edward Croom said in a statement. “Chaney Partrich has succumbed to the injuries she sustained in that deadly crash which occurred on Friday, March 13. We, as a community, are grieving with her family and friends at a life lost much too soon.”
Partrich, a midfielder, transferred to Mount Olive this season after spending one year at South Carolina. She appeared in two games this season. She caused two turnovers in a 21-2 win over Chowan on March 4.
