For the first time since 2008, the Philadelphia Barrage are in the win column.
Mark Matthews’ four goals and one assist helped the Barrage top the Connecticut Hammerheads 14-10 Monday night, the third day of the MLL’s abbreviated 2020 season at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.
Of course, the Barrage were brought back this offseason as part of the MLL’s celebration of its 20th anniversary.
The Hammerheads led 8-7 with 14:30 remaining in the third quarter after Dan Lomas’ snipe. This just 24 seconds after faceoff man Noah Rak opened the half by winning the faceoff and scoring, tying the score at 7.
Matthews’ third goal of the game sparked a 5-0 Barrage run that effectively clinched the win. Tommy Palasek chipped in three assists, and Chris Madalon made 13 saves.
Bayhawks Remain Undefeated
The Cannons cut it close — Bryan Cole’s tally with 1:16 remaining made it a two-goal game — but the Bayhawks are still the class of the MLL after a 15-13 win Monday night. The game was delayed until 8:48 p.m. ET due to lightning.
The comeback attempt was too little, too late, as Boston surrendered nine straight goals to Chesapeake between the first and second quarters. Down 2-0, the Bayhawks offense fired away until it built a 9-2 lead.
Lyle Thompson, who said just before the season that he’d never felt more dialed, continued his strong play. His four goals and one assist were good for a game-high five points. Andrew Kew continued his hot start with another three goals.
And Brian Phipps’ 13 saves were just the latest strong showing for the 32-year-old born in Annapolis.
