This game lived up to its billing.

Hyped as a contender for game of the season (for good reason), Thursday evening’s ACC matchup between No. 3 Syracuse and No. 4 Boston College at the Carrier Dome was an all-out slugfest of national contenders.

But it was the Eagles, fueled by Charlotte North — who else? — that earned the type of win indicative of a team peaking at the right time. Jenn Medjid scored the game-winner with 1:04 left and Rachel Hall made an athletic stop on the doorstep with 43 seconds left as the Eagles held on for a 14-13 win.

Despite being intermittently faceguarded by the Orange, North registered five goals and one assist while continuing her draw dominance with eight draw controls. Boston College (12-1, 8-1 ACC) won 18 of 28 draws.

Boston College held a bit of control early, taking an 8-6 lead into halftime.

Syracuse (11-2, 7-2 ACC) opened the second half with a goal from Sam Swart, then North pulled off her typical hijinks for another goal that’s sure to attract national attention.

Down 9-7, Syracuse suffered a potentially monumental loss. It’s unclear of the severity of the injury at this point, but Megan Carney went down with a non-contact injury when attempting to dodge, and she immediately grabbed her knee. She later returned to the sideline in tears with her knee iced and wrapped as teammates came to her side to console her.

Emily Hawryschuk, who yesterday announced her intention to return to Syracuse in 2022 after tearing her ACL earlier this season, stood by Carney’s side.

Following Carney’s injury, Syracuse ripped off three straight goals to take a 10-9 lead. Meaghan Tyrrell, Emma Ward and Swart were the catalysts of the run, which was broken when Courtney Weeks took an assist from her twin sister, Cassidy, to tie the score at 10.

What followed was a shot-for-shot second half. North eventually gave BC a 13-12 lead with 10:22 remaining on her signature stepdown laser from the eight-meter arc.

Swart tied the score at 13 just over one minute later, and the teams remained scoreless for the next nine minutes. A hectic offensive possession then went BC’s way, as Caitlynn Mossman found Medjid in a player-up scenario to take the lead with 1:04 remaining.

Syracuse won the next draw, and Gary Gait immediately called for a timeout. Immediately out of the pause, the Orange made a mad dash for the cage — only for Hall to make just her fourth save of the contest to halt Syracuse’s comeback.

These two ACC rivals will play again Saturday at 12 p.m. Eastern. Boston College has won the last five meetings.
