With some regions yet to begin their spring lacrosse seasons, there isn’t much movement to report in the Nike/US Lacrosse High School Boys’ National Top 25. But there were a few notable results.

McDonogh (Md.) earned one of the biggest wins of the early going, besting Gonzaga (D.C.) 12-9 to shoot up the national ranks. JP Ward notched five goals as McDonogh scored the game's final three tallies. Gonzaga had stormed back from a 9-4 deficit to tie the score at 9 apiece.

This is the first of our weekly updates to the rankings, including Regional Top 10 lists for teams representing the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, Midwest and West. Check back to uslaxmagazine.com next week as the Mid-Atlantic region begins in full. Updates from the Midwest will begin on March 24, and updates from Northeast will begin on March 31.

Last season: 15-1

The Friars are loaded. The lineup features the nation’s top-ranked senior, reigning Northeast Player of the Year Brennan O’Neill (Duke), and junior midfielder Andrew McAdorey (Duke). Coach Keith Wieczorek’s squad upended an impressive list of opponents last year, and the 2020 slate is just as challenging, including the likes of rival Chaminade (N.Y.), Delbarton (N.J.), St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), Yorktown (N.Y.) and New Canaan (Conn.).

2. Victor (N.Y.)
Last season: 17-5

Coach Jim Andre has built the Rochester-area program into one of the best in the state, as Victor is looking to claim its fifth state title in six years. The Blue Devils are led by the Albany-bound trio of attackmen Camden Hay, Joey Pezzimenti and Regan Endres. Hay and Pezzimenti combined for 93 goals and 86 assists in 2019.

3. Chaminade (N.Y.)
Last season: 12-2

The Flyers boast another talented squad. Returners for coach Jack Moran include goalie Alex Zepf (Cornell) and defenders Brendan McCabe (Michigan) and Patrick Noonan (Denver). Faceoff specialist James Ball (Yale) is one of the best in the region. The Chaminade schedule is again littered with tough tests against programs like St. Anthony’s, Delbarton (N.J.), Darien (Conn.), Gonzaga (D.C.) and Massapequa (N.Y.).

4. Darien (Conn.)
Last season: 16-5

Legendary coach Jeff Brameier guided the Blue Wave to their 14th state title since 1997. Darien’s tough slate includes matchups with Manhasset (N.Y.), Chaminade, Yorktown (N.Y.) and Ridgefield (Conn.). Goalie Andy Demopoulos (Johns Hopkins) and Michael Minicus (Colgate) are among the team’s top returners.

5. Manhasset (N.Y.)
Last season: 16-3

Manhasset’s season ended in the state quarterfinals, but coach Keith Cromwell is challenging the Indians with matchups against Garden City (N.Y.), Darien and Chaminade. Jake Tolentino (Georgetown) is a key returner on defense, while Peter Lapina (Dartmouth) and Aidan Mulholland (Michigan) provide firepower on offense.

6. Brunswick (Conn.)
Last season: 16-3

The Bruins are loaded, especially with a junior class featuring defenseman Colin Mulshine (Princeton), midfielder Blake Borges (Syracuse), LSM Blake Burchill (Bucknell) and midfielder Lucas Delgado (Michigan). Brunswick’s schedule includes games with Deerfield (Mass.), Darien, Haverford School (Pa.) and Hill Academy (Ontario, Canada).

7. Massapequa (N.Y.)
Last season: 18-2

The Chief open the season looking to build on a 16-game winning streak, which was punctuated by a state Class A championship. Attackman Jack Lufti (St. John’s), midfielder Logan Tucker (Albany) and defender AJ Pilate (Army) are among the seniors leading the returning cast of players. Coach Tim Radomski’s squad will face the likes of Chaminade (N.Y.) and Smithtown East (N.Y.).

8. Garden City (N.Y.)
Last season: 16-2

Senior Billy Kephart (Cornell) returns to anchor what should be a sound defense. Garden City boasted impressive wins over St. Ignatius (Calif.), Loyola (Ill.), Shoreham-Wading River (N.Y.) and Smithtown West (N.Y.) in 2019. The 2020 slate features tough matchups with Shoreham-Wading River, St. Ignatius and Manhasset.

9. Ward Melville (N.Y.)
Last season: 14-4

Senior goalie Collin Krieg (North Carolina), senior defender Alex Schrank (Providence) and senior LSM Ethan Larson (North Carolina) return to lead the Patriots. 10. Baldwinsville (N.Y.)
Last season: 16-4

But 2020 is shaping up to be a special year for Baldwinsville, as it returns a talented core of players in Braden McCard (Mercyhurst), Brendan Wilcox (Boston University), Casey Scott (Mercyhurst) and Braden Lynch (Fairfield). The Bees will be one of the best teams in the Syracuse area and will be tested by teams like Jamesville-DeWitt (N.Y.) and West Genesee (N.Y.).

The Lakers climbed into the top 5 of the national ranking last season after defeating Delbarton for the Tournament of Champions title and downing Manasaquan (N.J.) and Summit (N.J.) along the way. Mountain Lakes had a sensational senior class, but the Lakers won’t falter with its strong returning group. Previous: 4

6. Malvern Prep (Pa.), 0-0

The Friars ride into 2020 on a high note after winning the Inter-Ac championship last year by defeating rival Haverford (Pa.) in double-overtime. The Friars play a challenging schedule in and out of conference. Previous: 5

8. St. Stephen's & St. Agnes (Va.), 2-0

Previous: 7

Midwest Top 10

1. Culver Military Academy (Ind.)
Last season: 20-1

The Eagles ended their season with 16 straight victories, including impressive wins over Haverford (Pa.), Gonzaga (D.C.), New Trier (Ill.) and Hill Academy (Ont.). Culver should have scoring pop, led by Owen Hiltz (Syracuse), and superb play in net from Michael Gianforcaro (Princeton), but it has to replace faceoff maestro Alec Stathakis (Denver).

2. Brother Rice (Mich.)
Last season: 23-0

The Warriors return plenty of scoring punch. Among the top players back to lead the way are DJ Dixon, who recorded a hat trick in last year’s epic state title clash with Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.), as well as attackman Jordan Hyde, who earned All-American honors last season.

3. Dublin Coffman (Ohio)
Last season: 24-1

The Shamrocks were as explosive as can be last season en route to their first state title. They’ll have to find new sources for scoring without Evan James, who registered five of Coffman’s 13 goals in last year’s state final, and Ethan Tyack, who had two goals and four assists.

4. St. Ignatius (Ohio)
Last season: 18-5

The Wildcats should contend for a sixth straight state final four berth in 2020. They return a pair of superstars in Michael Boehm, who had 71 goals and 47 assists to push his program records to 181 goals, 119 assists and 300 points, and Connor Cmiel, a midfielder who had 45 goals and 23 assists last year.

5. MICDS (Mo.)
Last season: 18-1

The Rams have shown plenty, winning 92 straight against Show Me State opposition. MICDS has to replace more than usual after graduating a senior class that included Graham Bundy Jr. (Georgetown), Thomas Neidringhaus (Boston U.) and Henry Carpenter (Penn State), who combined for 13 goals in last year’s state title game. While five of seven all-state players are gone, juniors Crawford Bundy and Will Kacmarek return.

6. Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.)
Last season: 20-4

The Shamrocks had a great 2019 season, going 20-1 against everyone but Brother Rice. Detroit Catholic Central does have to replace significant offensive talent, as graduated seniors Joseph Karnish and Ryan Birney combined for 10 goals in last year’s state championship.

7. New Trier (Ill.)
Last season: 20-5

The Trevians had quite the run to a state title last year, including a dominant performance in the championship game, but they have to replace a massive graduating class. Despite all the scoring prowess lost, New Trier returns an All-American in net in Cooper Yaccino.

8. Cincinnati St. Xavier (Ohio)
Last season: 17-7

The Bombers came on strong at the end of last year and made a run to the state title game. They should remain solid in 2020, returning talented players like Andrew Green, who had a hat trick in the 13-8 final loss to Dublin Coffman, and Noah Reidy, who had two goals and an assist in the final and a hat trick in the regional championship win over Moeller.

9. Forest Hills Central (Mich.)
Last season: 22-1

The Rangers won their second championship in four years and look to build on a run of dominance that includes four straight finals appearances and eight straight final four trips. While they lost a pair of All-American midfielders to graduation in Logan Wedder and Luke Majick, they return an All-American attacker in Jackson Clay.

10. Cathedral (Ind.)

Coming off their fifth state title in program history, the Irish return IHSLA State Championship Player of the Game and All-American Sam Bedich. Talented scorers Jack Neidlinger and John Petruzzi also return, and sophomore Kevin Berutich is another player to watch.

7. Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.), 3-0

The Gators have a chance to avenge their 2019 WCAL championship loss to St. Ignatius Prep when the teams meet for the first time this season Wednesday. As part of its 3-0 start, Sacred Heart also handed Loyola-Los Angeles a loss on Feb. 29 and beat Redwood 17-4 last week. Previous: 6

Senior midfielder Trevor Douglas (Furman) and senior attackman Josh Carlson (Denver) headline the returners. Previous: 9

9. Lake Oswego (Ore.), 0-0

The Lakers open March 17 at Sunset (Ore.) and seek to pick up where they left off last year when they won 10 straight to end the season with the Oregon state title. Attackman Jonas Hunter (Vermont), who led with 73 goals and 47 assists, midfielder Marshall McGuire (Syracuse) and defenders Connor Willihnganz and Henry Sorenson are part of a strong 14-player senior class that seeks guide Lake Oswego to its title defense. Previous: 10

10. Regis Jesuit (Colo.), 0-0
