A majority of teams in the Northeast have at least started practicing, meaning a large chunk of the Nike / US Lacrosse High School Boys’ National Top 25 is set to get under way in the near future.

Some Connecticut schools are playing games, whereas teams in New York are just beginning to make their way back to the field. That’s sure to shake up the rankings over the next few weeks, but for now, it’s McDonogh (Md.) that is continuing to climb the Top 25. The Eagles are off to a 5-0 start and are all the way up to No. 3 from No. 6 this week.

Elsewhere, Georgetown Prep (D.C.) is up from No. 11 to No. 6, and La Salle (Pa.) enters the ranks at No. 25 on the heels of a 6-1 start to the spring.

The last time St. Anthony’s played a meaningful lacrosse game, the Friars came from behind to edge rival Chaminade 14-13 to win the 2019 CHSAA Class AAA championship. Jake Bonomi scored the winner, and Brennan O’Neill netted seven goals. Bonomi’s at Michigan and O’Neill is a freshman star at Duke. Led by Andrew McAdorey, the current crop of Friars get their chance to forge their legacy when St. Anthony’s finally plays later this month, opening against St. John the Baptist (N.Y.) on April 27. Longtime Flyers coach Jack Moran is quick to point out Will Lynch is no FOGO. He’s also Chaminade’s best offensive midfielder. Charles Balsamo’s combination of vision, shooting skills, feeding ability and relentless riding makes him one of the best attackmen in the Class of 2022, and fellow Duke commit Vincent Fowler can play anywhere on close defense or LSM. And look out for Conor McCabe, a 6-2, 205-pound left attackman who is a power dodger and a hard step-down shooter. The Flyers finally return to the field April 27 at Kellenberg with the first of three matchups against St. Anthony’s coming two days later. Previous: 2

3. Darien (Conn.), 2-0

Jeff Brameier said he did more coaching and teaching in the preseason than he’s had to do in years past because there’s no natural flow from 2020 to 2021. The results, at least, tell a different story. The Blue Wave opened with a 24-1 win over McMahon (Conn.) and then defeated Glastonbury (Conn.) 19-5. In that victory, Matthew Minicus had four goals and an assist, Brady Pokorny had three goals and Matt Stein, Finn Pokorny, Jamison Moore, Christian Alliegro and Riley Strub had two goals each. The Dan Stone coaching era at Victor is inching closer with the juniors from a year ago hungry to prove there’s no drop-off for one of New York’s most dominant programs. That includes midfielder Alex Seiler, a Clarkson commit, defender Michael Mitchko, attackman/midfielder Nick Benetti and attackman Liam Erwin. 5. Brunswick School (Conn.), 6-0

The Bruins remain undefeated with a tight 11-8 win over Lawrenceville School (N.J.) and a 15-7 home win over Wilton (Conn.). Luke Waters had three goals and an assist, red-hot Coulter Mackesy had two goals and two assists and Tomas Delgado and Blake Borges each had two goals and an assist. 6. Manhasset (N.Y.), 0-0

The highly anticipated return of the Woodstick Classic, an annual clash against Garden City (N.Y.) since 1935 that took a COVID-19 pause a year ago, is May 15, but first up, Manhasset meets Roslyn in its season opener May 4. Defensively, Manhasset will be anchored by Georgetown commit Jake Tolentino, who can play both close defense and long-stick midfield, as well as Swarthmore-bound Henry Kolyer. Previous: 6

7. Shoreham-Wading River (N.Y.), 0-0

The UNC-bound Schwartz twins — Johnny and Tyler — already have made a name for themselves, as has defender Jake Wilson, who committed to rival Duke. But they are among a talented group to watch from Shoreham-Wading River this year. The Wildcats will also be led by Harvard-bound junior midfielder Francisco Cortes, sophomore attack Alec Gregorek and junior defender Jake Whitney (Siena). Their first contest of a 14-game regular season is May 5 under the lights against Half Hollow Hills West (N.Y.). Previous: 7

8. Massapequa (N.Y.), 0-0

Previous incarnations of the Chiefs put up huge numbers offensively — and that’s still a possibility for Tim Radomski’s squad with the likes of senior Jack Nichtern (Navy) and junior Anthony Mollica (Hofstra) leading the attack. Massapequa, which takes on Calhoun (N.Y.) on May 4 for its first game since lifting the NYS Class A title in 2019, will be built on its defense, anchored by senior defenseman Ryan Durnin. Will this be a vintage Ward Melville team? Another New York State powerhouse? Those answers will start to take shape when the Patriots open the 2021 season at home against Sachem East on May 4. Junior midfielders Tyler Ruffini, Kevin Dolan and Tyler Flynn look to make a big impact for the Patriots. Previous: 9

When you’ve waited to play as long as the Trojans have, what’s another few days, right? Each team in Nassau County has a bye in an unbalanced 12-game regular season schedule, and Garden City’s just happens to be on opening day. Steve Finnell’s squad features many standouts on the undefeated football team, including senior midfielder Pierce Archer, junior defenseman Brendan Staub, senior FOGO Jack Cascaddan, sophomore midfielder Stevie Finnell and sophomore defender Cole Webber. The Purple Eagles won’t open play until April 27 against O’Connell (Va.), but they remain the team to beat in the Mid-Atlantic. Previous: 1

2. McDonogh (Md.), 5-0         

McDonogh was leading Loyola Blakefield (Md.) 4-0 late in the first quarter Friday when the game was suspended after Loyola’s Peter Laake suffered commotio cordis (a disruption of heart rhythm) after being hit by a ball. The Eagles began the week defeating Severn 9-6 on April 13, pulling away after being tied at 3 at halftime. Hugh Brown scored four goals, and Jack Horrigan had two goals. Previous: 8

3. Georgetown Prep (D.C.), 2-1

The Hoyas split a pair of games against Bullis (Md.) last week, losing 9-8 in double overtime on Thursday before winning the rematch 10-6 on Saturday. Hugh Mullane and Patrick Fitzgerald had two goals apiece in the overtime loss. Michael Ridgway paced the attack in the win, scoring four goals, while Will Angrick had two goals and two assists, Colin Burns added three goals and Zach Whittier had two goals. Peter Flannery made five first-half saves to set the tone as Prep jumped out to a 5-1 halftime lead. Previous: 5

4. Bullis (Md.), 2-1       

Bullis split a pair of games against Georgetown Prep last week. Tucker Wade led with four goals, including the game-winner, in a 9-8 double-overtime win Thursday. Connor Davis added three goals, and Maliik Wood had three assists. Mac Rietano had three ground balls, and Jack Fracyon made three of his 13 saves on short-range shots. Prep won the rematch 10-6 on Friday, despite three goals from Kieran Anzelone, two goals from Chase Band and two assists from Wood. Fracyon made another 13 saves. Previous: 3

Delbarton will open its season Tuesday against Montclair (N.J.), then it hosts Chatham (N.J.) on Saturday. Previous: 4

7. Calvert Hall (Md.), 1-1

Calvert Hall hasn’t played since April 9. The Cardinals are scheduled to return to action Tuesday against John Carroll (Md.) before a huge showdown with unbeaten McDonogh on Friday. Previous: 7

8. Archbishop Spalding (Md.), 6-1

Spalding defeated John Carroll by a 14-4 count on April 13. Ryan Schrier had four goals and four assists, Josh Tang contributed three goals and two assists, Race Ripley added three goals and two assists and Blake Malamphy won 15 of 17 faceoffs. The Cavaliers then stopped Gilman 15-9 on Friday. Michael Weisshaar had six goals and three assists, and Malamphy and Trey Fleece won 23 of 28 faceoffs to ignite the offense. 9. Malvern Prep (Pa.), 5-1

Malvern Prep bolted out to an 8-1 halftime lead on its way to an 18-3 win over Penn Charter (Pa.) on April 13. Eric Spanos led with four goals, while Colin McGill and Will Peden each had two goals and two assists and Nick Potemski added three goals. Michael Buono finished with five ground balls, while Justin Turley won 9 of 15 faceoffs. The Friars then beat Episcopal Academy (Pa.) 16-5 on Friday. Spanos paced the attack with eight goals, Peden had four assists and Cooper Frankenheimer had a goal and five ground balls. Buono came up with six ground balls, and Joe Doherty and Chris O’Grady each had three saves. The Friars face a big showdown with Haverford (Pa.) on Tuesday. Previous: 9

10. Boys' Latin (Md.), 3-1         

Jackson Walsh had three goals and an assist, Riar Schell and Dom Pietramala each added two goals and Ben Smith chipped in two assists to lead the Lakers to a 12-6 win over Gilman on April 13. Cardin Stoller made eight saves, and Mackenzie Moreland and Thomas Moxley were instrumental in winning possession on faceoffs. Garrett Glatz came up with a key goal off a rebound to stop a Gilman rally. Previous: 10

1. Dallas Jesuit (Texas), 8-2

In arguably the best matchup within the region this season, the Rangers dispatched then-No. 2 Highland Park (Texas) 12-7 on Friday. Dallas Jesuit rallied from a 7-5 third-quarter deficit to score seven unanswered goals. Curran Rose scored five times, including a third-quarter hat trick. Previous: 5

2. Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.), 17-0

The Crusaders completed an unbeaten season with a state title on March 26, defeating Hough (N.C.) 14-5. Bryce Wojnovich, a Jacksonville recruit, was named the state championship MVP for his five-goal performance. Junior Caden Zadell led Cardinal Gibbons with 42 goals this season. Previous: 4

3. Highland Park (Texas), 11-2

The Highlanders’ 11-game winning streak came to an end on Friday, dropping a 12-7 decision to Dallas Jesuit (Texas) after taking a 7-5 lead into the third quarter. Senior Thomas Mencke scored twice and added two assists during the loss. Three days earlier, Highland Park defeated Allen (Texas) 21-3. Mencke had four goals in the win. Previous: 2

4. Blessed Trinity (Ga.), 14-0

The Titans remain unbeaten following last week’s 12-5 win over King’s Ridge Academy (Ga.) and an 18-2 victory over Northview (Ga.). Riley Sullivan scored five times and added two assists last week while Finn McCarthy had four goals and four assists. Previous: 6

5. St. Andrew’s (Fla.), 12-0

After a long layoff, the Scots returned to play on Wednesday, defeating the same King’s Academy (Fla.) squad it faced in its last game on March 30 and repeating a 13-2 victory. St. Andrew’s defeated Oxbridge Academy (Fla.) 10-4 two days later. Kurt Schwarz scored twice and added a couple of assists in the win over King’s Academy. Previous: 8

6. Ponte Vedra (Fla.), 15-1

The Sharks will not defend their 2019 state title this year, falling in the second round of the playoffs 9-8 to Creekside (Fla.) in overtime. Earlier in the week, Ponte Vedra advanced following a 20-1 victory over Bartram Trail (Fla.). Maddox Johnson led the Sharks in scoring with 29 goals this season, including five against Bartram Trail. 7. Middle Creek (N.C.), 12-1

The Mustangs’ season came to an end on March 17, losing to eventual state champion Cardinal Gibbons 12-7. Eight Mustangs tallied double figures in goals this year, led by junior Tate Jones, who had 36. Charlie Riesett won more than 90 percent of faceoffs. Previous: 7

8. Jupiter (Fla.), 14-1

The Warriors are through the first two rounds of the playoffs. Jupiter won by default in the first round against Palm Beach Central (Fla.), then it defeated Wellington (Fla.) 19-1 on Thursday. Jackson Bashaw scored five goals and added an assist in the win. Previous: 9

The Trojans returned from a two-week break to defeat a Westminster (Ga.) 9-8 on Wednesday. Lassiter then lost to Walton (Ga.) 13-11 on Friday. Bryce Horton and Andrew Atchison earned hat tricks in the win over Westminster. Previous: 3

1. Culver Academy (Ind.), 10-1

The Eagles were tested in their second straight Sunday Buckeye State battle. Down 2-0 after a quarter and up by a single goal at the half, Culver ended up with a 12-4 victory over Upper Arlington. The defense held the Golden Bears to just two goals over the final three quarters. Previous: 1

2. New Trier (Ill.), 0-0

A new Trevians team with no returning starters will be hard at work with three games apiece this week and next. Led by midfielder Jesse Shapiro (Williams) and shutdown defender Vincent Flannagan (Providence), New Trier starts with a trio of Central Suburban League (CSL) contests against Glenbrook South, Highland Park and Deerfield. 3. Loyola Academy (Ill.), 0-0

The Ramblers also will begin by playing three games their first week, but a week later than the Trevians. They open with in-state games against Mount Carmel, St. Ignatius and St. Rita. While Loyola Academy will be favored in all three games, three games in five days could be a challenge. Previous: 4

4. Dublin Jerome (Ohio), 9-0

After winning eight straight against Buckeye State competition, including an enormous road win at St. Xavier, the Celtics added a big victory over an out-of-state foe, edging Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.) 13-10. The score was tied after three quarters before Dublin Jerome took over in the fourth, and the Celtics got goals from nine players on the day. Previous: 5

5. East Grand Rapids (Mich.), 4-0

The Pioneers were dominant in their return from spring break, beating Traverse City United (Mich.) 17-1. Expect a fun game on Tuesday when East Grand Rapids plays host to Rockford, which has gotten off to a 4-0 start. Previous: 6

6. Brother Rice (Mich.), 5-1

Since a 2-1 start in which they edged Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.) by a goal and fell to St. Ignatius (Ohio) by two, the Warriors have doubled up three straight foes, including a 12-6 victory over Cathedral (Ind.). Wednesday brings a huge Mitten State clash as Brother Rice hosts 3-1 Detroit Catholic Central, whose lone loss came in overtime to East Grand Rapids. Previous: 7

7. Upper Arlington (Ohio), 7-1

Even the Golden Bears’ first loss was an impressive effort, as they led top-ranked Culver after a quarter and trailed by a single goal at the half. Mac Scholl made 15 saves. Upper Arlington has outscored seven in-state foes by a 98-26 margin, with Sam Burns, Marco Landolfi and Chris Mazzaferi all recording hat tricks in a win over Worthington Kilbourne (Ohio). 8. Prior Lake (Minn.), 0-0

The Lakers get started this week with games against Shakopee (Minn.) and Lakeville North (Minn.). Both contests could prove challenging as the Sabers and Panthers won 11 games apiece in 2019 and opened this season in strong fashion. Shakopee won its 2021 opener 22-1, and Lakeville North won its first two games by a combined margin of 31-6. Previous: 9

9. MICDS (Mo.), 8-1

It was a particularly wild week in the Show-Me State, as DeSmet beat MICDS, and days later, St. Louis University toppled DeSmet. DeSmet, MICDS and SLU now all have one in-state loss. The Rams have plenty of chances to prove themselves with a slew of top teams on the docket in SLU, Upper Arlington (Ohio), John Burroughs (Mo.) and a rematch with DeSmet all before the end of April. T-10. Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.), 5-2

The Royals fared well on their trip to the Buckeye State, doubling up on Olentangy Liberty and falling to one of the Midwest's top teams, Dublin Jerome, by three goals. That means Hamilton Southeastern's only two losses have come to two of the region's top teams — Brother Rice (Mich.) and Dublin Jerome — by a combined four goals. Previous: NR

Beyond being undefeated in the Sunflower State, the Lancers have been competitive against one of the top teams in the South, falling 15-9 to Episcopal Dallas (Texas), and one of the top teams in the Midwest, taking MICDS (Mo.) to overtime. Previous: NR

1. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 0-0

St. Ignatius opens April 20 at Marin Catholic (Calif.). In their last full season on the field, the Wildcats returned to prominence after a down season in 2018, and they were looking to continue their climb last year. That plan got delayed, not derailed. St. Ignatius Prep seeks to defend its West Catholic Athletic League title from two years ago with a much different lineup, but there’s still plenty of talent, led by a strong senior class. Top returning players include senior attackmen Nils Barry (Bates College) and Jackson Kane (Colgate), senior midfielder Henry Niehaus (Brown) and senior defender Duke Reeder (Stanford football). 2. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 1-0

The Falcons opened their season last Wednesday with a bang, routing Canyon Crest (Calif.) 25-1. The two-time defending CIF San Diego Open Division state champions got five points each from Christian Lerose, James Duncan and Grant Bauer, while the defense proved suffocating in limiting Canyon Crest opportunities on goal. Torrey Pines travels to Orange County to play Foothill in what should be a better test Saturday. Previous: 2

3. Regis Jesuit (Colo.), 0-0

The Raiders had some young talent that got valuable experience in a disappointing 2019 campaign, and now they are the upperclassmen leading the team. Regis Jesuit is especially strong at the close defense and attack positions, but the key will be seeing how a three-senior goalie competition plays out and the development of the middies on offense and defense. Top returning players include senior attackmen Jack Ringhofer and Will McFadden, senior long-stick middie Adam Zdanovicz, senior midfielder Jack Egan and sophomore defender Jack Casey, who would have started as a freshman. 4. Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.), 1-0

The 2019 WCAL runners up began play last week, beating Bellarmine Prep (Calif.) 11-8 in a conference matchup. The Gators are led by a strong senior class that includes midfielders Ben Ramsey and Billy Barnds and defenders Cav Williams and Paul Barton. Junior Max Sloat should pace the attack. Previous: 4

5. Corner Canyon (Utah), 11-0

The Chargers shut out a second straight opponent last week, beating Skyridge (Utah) 26-0 on Thursday. The Chargers got five goals and three assists from both Jon King and Mason Quick, while Eric Neilson had three goals and three assists, and Jona Serrell added three goals and two assists. 6. St. Margaret’s Episcopal (Calif.), 6-1

The Tartans are on the rise. A little more than a week after beating Loyola Los Angeles (Calif.), they added another notable victory over Palos Verdes (Calif.) on Saturday. St. Margaret’s won 10-5 behind Riley Chester’s four-goal performance, including three as part of a 7-0 run to begin the game. Makai Todd, Will Stahl and Owen Binder each added two goals. 7. Loyola Los Angeles (Calif.), 4-1

The Cubs are back in after capping an impressive week with a 7-5 win Saturday at undefeated Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.). Aidan Lee paced the offense with four goals, while Owen Gaffney added two goals and Henry Link made 12 saves. That followed an even more exciting victory Thursday when Matteo Silvestri scored the winner in overtime to lift the Cubs past Mater Dei 9-8. He had four goals and two assists for the night with his final score coming off Gaffney’s fourth assist. Matt Gottfried went 15 of 21 at the faceoff X, and Lee and Luc Dumont each had two goals. Loyola also had a 10-5 win over Sierra Canyon (Calif.) to rebound from a loss to St. Margaret’s the week prior. Previous: NR

8. Mater Dei (Calif.), 6-1

The Monarchs bounced back from an overtime loss to Loyola Los Angeles with a 29-0 win over J Serra Catholic. Nick Colignon made 13 saves in the loss to the Cubs, Lucas de la Paz, Tristen Jewell and Evan Curry each has two goals. Previous: 9

9. La Costa Canyon (Calif.), 6-0

The Mavericks returned from a week off to shut out Scripps Ranch (Calif.) 13-0 on April 13 and then beat Grossmont (Calif.) 12-7 on Saturday. Prior to the Grossmont game, LCC had allowed a total of eight goals through the first five games. Previous: 5

10. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 0-0

The Bruins won their seventh state title in 2019 and were ready to pick up where they left off last year, but the season shut down before they ever took the field. Cherry Creek would have returned seven starters and 25 of 36 players from that championship squad, but only four of those return after 21 seniors graduated in 2020. Senior attackman/midfielder Dakota Johnson and junior faceoff specialist Sawyer Brewer lead a group that will look to improve as the season progresses. Cherry Creek begins its season in early May.
