A new team took over the top spot in the Nike / US Lacrosse High School Boys’ National Top 25 thanks to former No. 1 Calvert Hall (Md.) dropping a close game against previously unranked St. Mary’s Annapolis.

The Saints moved into the rankings at No. 12, while Calvert Hall fell to No. 14 and St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) slid into the top spot despite not yet beginning its season.

Otherwise, the biggest movement came from McDonogh (Md.), jumping eight spots to No. 6. The Eagles already have three wins over ranked teams. Landon (Md.) also joins the Top 25 after opening with a big win over St. Andrew’s Episcopal on Friday.

1. St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), 0-0

The last time we saw St. Anthony’s play a meaningful lacrosse game, the Friars came from behind to edge rival Chaminade 14-13 in the 2019 CHSAA Class AAA championship. Jake Bonomi scored the winner, and Brennan O’Neill netted seven goals. Bonomi is now at Michigan and O’Neill is a freshman star at Duke. Led by Andrew McAdorey, the current crop of Friars gets a chance to forge a legacy when St. Anthony’s finally plays later this month. Previous: 1

2. Chaminade (N.Y.), 0-0

Longtime Flyers coach Jack Moran is quick to point out Will Lynch is no FOGO. He’s also Chaminade’s best offensive midfielder. Charles Balsamo’s combination of vision, shooting skills, feeding ability and relentless riding makes him one of the best attackmen in the Class of 2022, and fellow Duke commit Vincent Fowler can play anywhere on close defense or LSM. And look out for Conor McCabe, a 6-2, 205-pound left attackman who is a power dodger and a hard step-down shooter. The Flyers finally return to the field April 27 at Kellenberg with the first of three matchups against St. Anthony’s coming two days later. Previous: 2

3. Darien (Conn.), 0-0

The Blue Wave open their season Tuesday against McMahon (Conn.) and then quickly face some of the best the state of Connecticut has to offer — Ridgefield, New Canaan, Staples and a juicy matchup against Brunswick — in their first six games. Brown commit Andy Demopoulos should be busy in the cage, as will poles Sam Erickson, a senior LSM bound for Army, and senior defender Drew Amiraskis, who committed to Vassar. Previous: 3

4. Victor (N.Y.), 0-0

The Dan Stone coaching era at Victor is inching closer with the juniors from a year ago hungry to prove there’s no drop off for one of New York State’s most dominant programs. That includes midfielder Alex Seiler, a Clarkson commit, defender Michael Mitchko, attackman/midfielder Nick Benetti and attackman Liam Erwin. Those seniors get their first chance May 5 against Hilton (N.Y.). Previous: 4

5. Brunswick (Conn.), 4-0

Brunswick is off to a fast start, although it had to sweat out a season-opening 11-10 win over Belmont Hill School (Mass.). Victories over William Penn Charter School (Pa.) and two against Trinity-Pawling (N.Y.) followed. Princeton-bound senior attacker Coulter Mackesy is pacing the offense with 12 goals and four assists. Duke commit Luke Waters has nine goals and an assist, senior midfielder Lucas Delgado (Michigan) has six goals and six assists, junior long-stick middie Will Donovan (Notre Dame) has a bevy of caused turnovers and junior goalie Luke Schlank (Georgetown) has 44 saves. Previous: 5

6. Manhasset (N.Y.), 0-0

The highly anticipated return of the Woodstick Classic, an annual clash against Garden City (N.Y.) since 1935 that took a COVID-19 pause a year ago, is May 15, but first up, Manhasset meets Roslyn in its season opener May 4. Defensively, Manhasset will be anchored by Georgetown commit Jake Tolentino, who can play both close defense and long-stick midfield, as well as Swarthmore-bound Henry Kolyer. Previous: 6

7. Shoreham-Wading River (N.Y.), 0-0

The UNC-bound Schwartz twins — Johnny and Tyler — already have made a name for themselves, as has defender Jake Wilson, who committed to rival Duke. But they are among a talented group to watch from Shoreham-Wading River this year. The Wildcats will also be lead by Harvard-bound junior midfielder Francisco Cortes, sophomore attackman Alec Gregorek and junior defenseman Jake Whitney (Siena). Their first contest of a 14-game regular season is May 5 under the lights against Half Hollow Hills West (N.Y.). Previous: 7

8. Massapequa (N.Y.), 0-0

Previous incarnations of the Chiefs put up huge numbers offensively — and that’s still a possibility for Tim Radomski’s squad with the likes of senior Jack Nichtern (Navy) and junior Anthony Mollica (Hofstra) leading the attack. However, Massapequa, which takes on Calhoun (N.Y.) on May 4 for its first game since lifting the NYS Class A title in 2019, will be built on its defense, anchored by senior defenseman Ryan Durnin. Previous: 8

9. Ward Melville (N.Y.), 0-0

Will this be a vintage Ward Melville team? Another New York State powerhouse? Those answers will start to take shape when the Patriots open the 2021 season at home against Sachem East on May 4. Junior midfielders Tyler Ruffini, Kevin Dolan and Tyler Flynn look to make a big impact for the Patriots. Previous: 9

10. Garden City (N.Y.), 0-0

When you’ve waited to play as long as the Trojans have, what’s another few days, right? Each team in Nassau County has a bye in an unbalanced 12-game regular season schedule, and Garden City’s just happens to be on opening day. Steve Finnell’s squad features many standouts from the undefeated football team, including senior midfielder Pierce Archer, junior defenseman Brendan Staub, senior FOGO Jack Cascaddan, sophomore midfielder Stevie Finnell and sophomore defender Cole Webber. The Trojans meet Port Washington on May 7. Previous: 10

1. Gonzaga (D.C.), 0-0

The Purple Eagles won’t open play until April 27 against O’Connell (Va.). It’s been two weeks since they scrimmaged Bullis, and they’re hoping to build quickly in their preseason. Previous: 2

2. Bullis (Md.), 1-0

The Bulldogs opened their season with a 16-5 win at Norfolk Academy (Va.) on Saturday. Maliik Wood finished with three goals and two assists, Connor Davis added two goals and two assists and Spencer Hughes, Chase Band and Jewel Walker had two goals apiece. Kieran Anzelone chipped in three assists, and Charlie Muller had a goal and assist, while Jack Fracyon made seven saves. Bullis returns to action with games against Georgetown Prep (Md.) on Thursday and Saturday, a home-and-away early season showdown of top 5 teams. Georgetown also has a game under its belt. Previous: 3

3. McDonogh (Md.), 3-0

McDonogh overcame a 6-4 deficit against No. 10 Boys’ Latin (Md.) thanks to solid faceoff play from sophomore Zach Hayashi on its way to an impressive 15-8 win on April 6. Jack Horrigan remained red hot with four goals and two assists, and Jack Dudas had three goals and an assist. Freshman Ben Firlie provided the go-ahead goal in the second half. Anthony Wilson made eight saves. Three days later, Malachi Jones came up with turnover in the final 30 seconds to help McDonogh hold its one-goal lead in an eventual 13-11 win over No. 8 Archbishop Spalding. McCabe Millon had three goals to lead the offense that also got two goals each from Hugh Brown, Horrigan and Ben Bavar. Luke Miller added a goal and two assists. Wilson made six saves to help McDonogh pull away after being tied at 7 at the half. Previous: 8

4. Delbarton (N.J.), 0-0

The Green Wave scrimmaged Bergen Catholic on Saturday in their first look at this year’s team against outside competition. According to coach Matt Kovachik, both teams played with energy and enthusiasm coming off long layoffs, and the atmosphere felt like a regular-season game. Bright spots were senior goalie Declan Maseker, senior defender Max LaTorre, senior long-stick middie Tripp Robinson, senior midfielder Donnie Tedesco and junior attackman David Link. Ground ball play, rides and clears and wing play will be an emphasis for Delbarton going forward. Delbarton will open its season Saturday at Ridgewood (N.J.). Previous: 4

5. Georgetown Prep (Md.), 1-0

Georgetown Prep opened its season with a 14-7 win at Penn Charter (Pa.) on Saturday. Zach Whittier led the offense with four goals, and Patrick Fitzgerald had three goals. Michael Ridgway, Hugh Mullane, Colin Burns and Dylan Hsu all had two goals apiece. Close defender Tim Kirlin helped anchor a defense that pushed Prep to a 9-3 halftime lead on its way to victory. The Hoyas play Bullis twice at the end of the week in a highly anticipated return to local action. Previous: 5

6. St. Mary’s (Md.), 3-1

St. Mary’s defeated previously top-ranked Calvert Hall 7-6 on Friday in a thriller, as the Saints avenged their 2019 MIAA title game loss to the Cardinals with much different lineups for both teams. St. Mary’s trailed 6-5 after three quarters but scored the only two goals of the fourth period. Tyler Barnett scored his fourth goal of the game to tie it, and then Nick Golini took a feed from Will Hopkins for the game-winner with less than six minutes to go. The defense did the rest with Wes Schmidt making eight saves in front of defenders Colin Burlace, Nick Kaufman and Sam Palmisano. Long-stick middies George Action and Riley Reese and short-sticks Sean Berzins, Wyatt Cotton, Chris Golini and Brogan Stofa shored up the midfield. St. Mary’s began the week with a 9-7 win over Loyola Blakefield on April 6. Hopkins had two goals and two assists, Will Brimhall had three goals and Barnett had two goals. Teddy Androus won 10 of 18 faceoffs. Schmidt came up with nine saves. Previous: NR

7. Calvert Hall (Md.), 1-1

The Cardinals’ win streak ended at 19 games with a 7-6 loss to St. Mary’s on Friday. They led 6-5 after three quarters of play but couldn’t hold on. Tommy Lubin made nine saves, and Ethan Long had three goals and an assist, while Shuey Kelly and Wyatt Hottle each had one goal and one assist. Calvert Hall had won 20 straight MIAA games, including the last three league crowns. Previous: 1

8. Archbishop Spalding (Md.), 4-1

Spalding split games last week, defeating St. Paul’s 11-5 on April 6 behind three goals and an assist from Josh Tang. Ryan Schrier had two goals and two assists, Race Ripley added two goals and an assist and Nick Gutierrez finished with one goal and two assists. Trey Fleece and Blake Malamphy came up big at the faceoff X. The Cavaliers lost to No. 3 McDonogh on Friday by a 13-11 count. Schrier and Finn Kelly had three goals apiece, and Michael Weishaar had a goal and three assists. Weishaar and Logan Meighan scored goals to give Spalding a 9-7 lead in the third quarter. Jake Oliver made seven saves. Previous: 6

9. Malvern Prep (Pa.), 5-1

Malvern Prep jumped out to an 8-5 halftime lead and used a 9-2 second-half run to secure a 17-7 win over Gilman (Md.) on Thursday. Nick Potemski had three goals and three assists, and Colin McGill and Eric Spanos each tallied three goals and two assists. Will Peden put up 10 points on a goal and nine assists. Michael Buono had eight ground balls, Justin Turley won 11 of 14 faceoffs and Dylan Almonte won 8 of 12 faceoffs. Chris O’Grady made four saves. On Saturday, McGill had four goals and two assists, Spanos tallied five goals and Peden added a goal and six assists in a 13-5 win over Conestoga. Cooper Frankenheimer had six ground balls. Previous: 9

10. Boys’ Latin (Md.), 2-1

Dom Pietramala scored four goals and Garrett Glatz added two goals, but the Lakers could not hold a 6-4 halftime lead in a 15-8 loss to No. 8 McDonogh on April 6. Riar Schell had two assists in the loss, and Cardin Stoller recorded 15 saves. It was Boys’ Latin’s first game since their season-opening win over No. 10 Haverford on March 13. The Lakers rebounded with a 15-6 win over John Carroll on Friday. Ben Smith registered a goal and five assists, Pietramala had three goals and three assists and Glatz added three goals. Thomas Moxley went 6-for-8 on faceoffs, Mac Moreland was 6-for-7 on faceoffs with four ground balls and Aidan Smith was 6-for-8 on faceoffs. Stoller made six saves. Previous: 7

South Top 10

1. Ponte Vedra (Fla.), 15-0

The Sharks remained unbeaten last week after a pair of victories, including a thrilling 6-5 victory over Oak Hall (Fla.) on Friday. Freddie DiMarzo, a Utah commit, scored a hat trick and the game-winner against Oak Hall. Maddox Johnson scored seven times in Ponte Vedra’s 20-8 win over Maclay (Fla.) on April 6. The Sharks and other teams in Florida start state playoffs this week. Previous: 1

2. Highland Park (Texas), 10-1

The Highlanders are on a 10-game winning streak after victories last week against Rockwell (Texas), Woodlands (Texas) and Memorial (Texas). Highland Park has a big matchup against Dallas Jesuit (Texas) this week. Previous: 2

3. Lassiter (Ga.), 12-2

The Trojans were off last week and will return to play on Friday against Westminster (Ga.). They’ve won four in a row since a three-goal loss to North Gwinnett on March 20. Previous: 3

4. Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.), 17-0

The Crusaders completed an unbeaten season with a state title on March 26, defeating Hough (N.C.) 14-5. Bryce Wojnovich, a Jacksonville recruit, was named the state championship MVP for his five-goal performance. Junior Caden Zadell led Cardinal Gibbons with 42 goals this season. Previous: 4

5. Dallas Jesuit (Texas), 7-2

7. Middle Creek (N.C.), 12-1

The Mustangs’ season came to an end on March 17, losing to eventual state champion Cardinal Gibbons 12-7. Eight Mustangs tallied double figures in goals this year, led by junior Tate Jones, who had 36. Charlie Riesett won more than 90 percent of faceoffs. Previous: 7

8. St. Andrew’s (Fla.), 12-0

The Scots’ games last week against Jupiter (Fla.) and Cardinal Newman (Fla.) were canceled. They enter state tournament play this week. Jack Schulte leads St. Andrew’s with 28 goals for the season. Junior Kurt Schwarz has a team-high 19 assists. Previous: 9

9. Jupiter (Fla.), 12-1

The Warriors won contests last week against Martin County (Fla.) and Benjamin (Fla.), but a highly anticipated contest against St. Andrew’s was canceled. Midwest Top 10

1. Culver Academy (Ind.), 9-1

The Eagles bounced back from their first loss of the season with a dominant performance against one of Ohio's top teams, beating Cleveland St. Ignatius 24-8 thanks in part to a hat trick by Ty English (three goals, four assists). Next up for Culver is another Buckeye State battle against Upper Arlington on Sunday. Previous: 1

2. MICDS (Mo.), 6-0

The Rams doubled up on Christian Brothers (Mo.) and Rockhurst (Mo.) to stay undefeated, including a 12-goal explosion in the first half against the Cadets. In the first win, Crawford Bundy and Landon Gelven combined to score 12 goals, while Bundy led the Rams with six goals against the Hawklets and Mark Mintzlaff scored five. Previous: 3

3. New Trier (Ill.), 0-0

A new Trevians team, with no returning starters, gets an immediate test on April 19 in Glenbrook South, which New Trier beat by five back in 2019. Green as they might be, the Trevians still have their customary top talent, including midfielder Jesse Shapiro (Williams) and a shutdown defender in Vincent Flannagan (Providence). Previous: 4

4. Loyola Academy (Ill.), 0-0

Don’t read too far into Loyola Academy’s 15-7 record in 2019, since it lost a single in-state game all year, and that was the state title game to New Trier. With Will Maheras (Yale) leading the attack, expect the Ramblers to be dangerous. Previous: 5

5. Dublin Jerome (Ohio), 6-0

The Celtics had a weekend to remember, with an 18-12 victory over 2019 state runner-up St. Xavier and a 21-3 win over Worthington Kilbourne (Ohio). They trailed the Bombers by a goal early in the second half before scoring five straight. Carter Barco led the way with six goals and two assists, Marik Tzagournis added four goals and three assists, Will Ackert controlled the middle of the field and Jack Donahue and Brady Sestili excelled at the faceoff X. Previous: 7

6. East Grand Rapids (Mich.), 3-0

After winning their first three games by a combined five goals, including an overtime victory against in-state power Detroit Catholic Central, the Pioneers enjoyed some down time on spring break. That ends this week as they face Traverse City United and Detroit Country Day. A battle with Rockford also is looming. Previous: 10

7. Brother Rice (Mich.), 3-1

The Warriors bounced back from a heartbreaker in Cleveland on Thursday night with an emphatic 17-8 win over Hartland (Mich.) on Saturday. Senior Bobby Reaume and sophomore Hunter Polonkey got off to a quick start against the Eagles, combining to score six of the Warriors’ first 10 goals. Brother Rice dropped a 9-7 loss to St. Ignatius before that. Previous: 2

8. Upper Arlington (Ohio), 5-0

Winners of 17 games back in 2019, the Golden Bears are off to a scorching start, including a 12-6 victory over Western Reserve Academy (Ohio) and a 10-goal win against Mason (Ohio) over the weekend. Senior captain Shea Keethler, who has nine goals and is 78-for-90 on faceoffs, recently announced his commitment to Maryland. Previous: NR

9. Prior Lake (Minn.), 0-0

After ending the 2019 season on a 12-game win streak, the Lakers have to wait until the final weeks of April to get started. West Top 10

1. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 0-0

St. Ignatius opens April 20 at Marin Catholic (Calif.). In their last full season on the field, the Wildcats returned to prominence after a down season in 2018, and they were looking to continue their climb last year. That plan got delayed — not derailed. St. Ignatius Prep seeks to defend its West Catholic Athletic League title from two years ago with a much different lineup, but there’s still plenty of talent, led by a strong senior class. Top returning players include senior attackmen Nils Barry (Bates College) and Jackson Kane (Colgate), senior midfielder Henry Niehaus (Brown) and senior defender Duke Reeder (Stanford football). Previous: 1

2. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 0-0

The Falcons open their season Wednesday against Canyon Crest (Calif.). After claiming their second straight CIF San Diego Open Division state title in 2019, they were off to a 3-0 start last year when the season shut down. Torrey Pines lost a group of 16 to graduation, but the program has a strong history of reloading and building depth through young talent. That remains the case in 2021, with senior attackman Dewey Egan (UNC), senior defenseman Tyler Blackburn (Brown), senior midfielder Logan Gutzwiller (Notre Dame) and junior midfielders Tayden Bultman (UNC) and Griffin Grant (Notre Dame) leading the way. Previous: 2

3. Regis Jesuit (Colo.), 0-0

The Raiders had some young talent that got valuable experience in a disappointing 2019 campaign, and now they are the upperclassmen leading the team. Regis Jesuit especially is strong at the close defense and attack positions, but the key will be seeing how a three-senior goalie competition plays out and the development of the middies on offense and defense. Top returning players include senior attackmen Jack Ringhofer and Will McFadden, senior long-stick middie Adam Zdanovicz, senior midfielder Jack Egan and sophomore defender Jack Casey, who would have started as a freshman. Colorado teams begin practice April 26 with games set for the following week. Previous: 3

4. Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.), 0-0

The 2019 WCAL runners up open Friday at Bellarmine Prep. The Gators returned nine starters last year and didn’t get the chance to try to avenge their championship loss to St. Ignatius Prep. Fortunately, many of those players are back now as seniors, including midfielders Ben Ramsey and Billy Barnds and defenders Cav Williams and Paul Barton. Junior Max Sloat should pace the attack. Previous: 4

5. La Costa Canyon (Calif.), 4-0

The Mavericks were idle last week but return from a 10-day layoff Tuesday against Scripps Ranch (Calif.). LCC will be looking to build of its strong start, which included in-state wins against Del Norte, St. Augustine SD, Canyon Crest and Rancho Bernardo. The Mavericks haven’t given up more than four goals in any game so far. Previous: 5

6. San Ramon Valley (Calif.), 0-0

The Wolves don’t have a ton of depth but feature a strong core of players who are expected to keep SRV among the top teams in the CIF North Coast Section. SRV finished 17-2 in 2019, suffering an upset loss to De LaSalle in the quarterfinals of the postseason tournament. Top players include senior midfielder Matt Carbonell (Holy Cross), senior attackman/midfielder Charlie Tagliaferri (Tufts) and junior midfielders Charlie Iler (Johns Hopkins) and Calvin Watson. Previous: 6

7. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 0-0

The Bruins won their seventh state title in 2019 and were ready to pick up where they left off last year, but the season shut down before they ever took the field. Cherry Creek would have returned seven starters and 25 of 36 players from that championship squad, but only four of those return after 21 seniors graduated in 2020. Senior attackman/midfielder Dakota Johnson and junior faceoff specialist Sawyer Brewer lead a group that will look to improve as the season progresses. Cherry Creek still has a few weeks before opening, as tryouts aren’t set to begin until April 26. Previous: 7

8. Corner Canyon (Utah), 10-0

The Chargers were idle last week but resume play Thursday against Skyridge (Utah), seeking to pick up where they left off. Corner Canyon has outscored opponents 186-32 this season. Previous: 8

9. Mater Dei (Calif.), 5-0

The Monarchs enter the mix after an impressive start to the season, which included a 13-9 win over newly ranked St. Margaret’s Episcopal on March 27. Mater Dei beat Los Alamitos (Calif.) on Wednesday with nine different players scoring goals, led by Triston Jewell and Grant Portillo each tallying four. Nick Colignon had four saves in goal. Previous: NR

10. St. Margaret’s Episcopal (Calif.), 4-1

Matt Groeninger tallied three goals and two assists, and Sebastien Chicas made 11 saves to lead the Tartans to an 11-9 win over previously ranked and unbeaten Loyola-Los Angeles (Calif.) on Friday. According to Devin Arkinson’s report for MaxLaxOC.com, Will Stahl scored off Groeninger’s assist with less than a minute remaining for an important insurance goal that sealed the win. St. Margaret’s also added a victory over Santa Fe Christian (Calif.) last week, as the Tartans bounced back from an early season loss to Mater Dei. Stahl had three goals and two assists in the Santa Fe Christian game. Previous: NR
