The Terps (7-1) jumped out to a 5-1 lead after limiting the Tar Heels (6-4) to just one goal in the first 29:58. Shockey had a lot to do with that, continuing his dominance into the second half as Maryland extended its lead to 8-2 and held a 9-4 advantage after three quarters.
But the Terps’ trend of letting up in the fourth quarter continued. North Carolina scored three unanswered goals to start the final period, culminating in a highlight-reel one-handed shot on the run by Chris Cloutier, to pull within two with 5:12 remaining.
Maryland defenseman Bryce Young answered in unlikely fashion, receiving an outlet on a restart, sprinting into the offensive end and uncorking a shot from just inside the restraining line that beat Tar Heels goalie Alex Bassil.
An empty-net goal by Logan Wisnauskas with 2:06 left provided the final margin.
North Carolina has lost four straight games since starting the season 6-0.
