After the surprising news that Liz Robertshaw was being let go last week, Boston University women’s lacrosse has found its new leader.

Lauren Morton, a 2008 IWLCA All-American midfielder with the Terriers, will take over as the head coach.

“On behalf of our entire department and university, it is a pleasure to welcome back Lauren to BU,” athletic director Drew Marrochello said. “Based on the impressions she left here as a student-athlete and an assistant, it is no surprise that she has put herself in position to take over this program and will aspire to achieve as a head coach the type of success she did as a student-athlete. Lauren is a true competitor and she is equally beloved and respected by teammates, players, colleagues and administrators. She is thrilled to once again return here, and we couldn’t be happier to have her back.”

Morton has served as the associate head coach with Duke for the past two years and has been on the Blue Devils coaching staff since 2014. She’s coached 10 IWLCA All-Americans in that span.

Before coaching at Duke, she was an assistant coach at Boston University from the 2010-2012 seasons.

“It is a great honor and privilege to have the opportunity to return to Boston and lead the BU women’s lacrosse program,” Morton said. “I am incredibly humbled and would like to thank president Robert A. Brown, senior vice president Todd Klipp, Drew Marrochello and all of the wonderful people at BU for this opportunity. This is a very special and exciting time for me as BU has always been my second home and this is a dream come true.”

Now in the Patriot League, the Terriers won the 2012 America East regular season title and went 10-2 in conference play when Morton was last on the team’s staff.

Before heading to Duke, Morton worked as an assistant with Georgetown for two seasons where the Hoyas made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA tournament and went a combined 24-15.

Morton was there for two All-American and 11 All-Big East selections as the squad’s offensive coordinator.

Robertshaw had coached the Terriers for 12 seasons before the school parted ways last week. She led the team to five straight Patriot League tournaments before surprisingly being let go. The team also won four America East championships under her leadership.

Morton inherits a team led by junior Kaliley Conry, who received national attention for her facilitating, and Patriot League first-team defender Tonianne Magnelli.

The Patriot League has been dominated by Loyola since its inception into the conference, and the Terriers took a step back the past two seasons from their typical top-of-the-conference positioning, but under Morton, the hope is to get back into being a competitive team at the top of the conference.

“I am very excited to lead a new chapter for BU women’s lacrosse and can’t wait to work with and serve these amazing young women every day,” Morton said.
