On Tuesday, Virginia men’s lacrosse coach Lars Tiffany was named the head coach of the Haudenosaunee Nationals for the 2023 World Lacrosse Men’s Championship in San Diego.

Tiffany was an assistant coach for the 2018 Haudenosaunee team that won the bronze medal in Netanya, Israel. Mark Burnam served as the head coach.

Also serving on the 2023 Nationals’ staff will be Darcy Powless (general manager), Tom Mariano (assistant general manager), Scott Marr (assistant coach), Vince Longboat (assistant coach) and Chris Doctor (assistant coach).

Tiffany is Virginia’s only head coach to win back-to-back NCAA championships (2019, 2021). He is a two-time ACC coach of the year and has made seven NCAA tournament appearances.

Tiffany, who grew up near the Onondaga Nation reservation in LaFayette, N.Y., can almost always be seen on the field carrying around the wooden stick made by Alfie Jacques that Tiffany’s late father, Bradford, had made for him in 2018.

Lars and his brothers, Hudson and Peter, grew up in LaFayette, N.Y., about 10 miles south of Syracuse, on a 250-acre dairy farm that their parents converted into a buffalo ranch. The ranch was near the Onondaga Nation reservation, where many of Tiffany’s classmates at LaFayette High School lived and where as a boy he was introduced to the sport that would become such a central part of his life.

‘I was fortunate to grow up in a setting where lacrosse is very important and more than just a sport to the Onondaga people,’ Tiffany said. ‘Their cultural values, family values, come through the sport with Onondaga people.’
