The Lafayette women’s lacrosse team, which has finished with a winning record just twice in the last 17 seasons, has hired up-and-coming coach Katie McConnell to help reverse its fortunes. The school announced the news Monday.

McConnell, the reigning MAAC Coach of the Year, just led Manhattan to an 11-6 mark and the team’s first postseason appearance since 2009. The 11 wins were tied for the most in program history, while the Jaspers’ 6-2 conference record was its best since 2005.

Lafayette parted ways in May with Alison Fisher after 11 seasons, during which the Leopards compiled a 63-125 record.

McConnell arrives in Easton, Pa., with an impressive pedigree that includes four years as a player at Division II Lock Haven, three years as an assistant at her alma mater, a brief stint as defensive coordinator at Coastal Carolina and three years as the head coach at Manhattan.

“Her head coaching experience and success as a player and coach make her an excellent fit for our women's lacrosse program,” Lafayette athletic director Sherryta Freeman said. “We are thrilled that she is on board to generate a championship culture and cultivate positive experiences for our student-athletes.”

“From the moment I stepped on campus, I knew Lafayette College was a special place with unlimited potential for its women's lacrosse program,” McConnell said. “I am looking forward to developing a championship culture that excels on the field, in the classroom and in the community.”

The Leopards are looking to rebuild after a 5-12 season (1-8 Patriot League). Forty-goal scorers Jane Kirby and Emma Novick graduated. Kirby was a three-time all-conference attacker.
