Cornell men's lacrosse coach Matt Kerwick resigned Monday, the university announced. Offensive coordinator Peter Milliman will serve as the team's interim head coach through the 2018 season.

"After careful thought and consideration, I have decided to step aside from my role as head coach of the men's lacrosse team to focus on my family," Kerwick said in a statement on the school's athletics website. "I would like to thank Cornell University for five great years."

The Big Red have had consecutive losing seasons for the first time since the 1990s, but do have a star to build around in Jeff Teat, the freshman sensation who punctuated his first year with five goals and seven assists in an 18-17 upset of nationally ranked Princeton.

"Watching our young team play one of the most challenging schedules in the country, the development throughout the season was very apparent and portends great things in the future," Cornell athletic director Andy Noel said.

Kerwick was named head coach on June 11, 2014, after serving in the position on an interim basis during the 2014 campaign and spending 2013 as an assistant. One of a handful of men's lacrosse head coaches to take three different teams to the NCAA tournament, Kerwick led Cornell to a combined record of 32-26 (13-11 Ivy), two Ivy League championships, two Ivy League tournament appearances, and two berths to the NCAA tournament. He previously was the head coach at Jacksonville and Hobart.

Milliman, recently named an assistant coach on the 2019 U.S. indoor team staff, will hold the job through the 2018 season, after which the university will conduct a nationwide search for a full-time replacement. He has previous stops as an assistant at Princeton, head coach at Division II Pfeiffer, and assistant at Division III RIT and Siena.

Cornell is the third Division I men's lacrosse program that will have a new coach in 2018. Michigan and Delaware have yet to hire replacements for John Paul and Bob Shillinglaw. Paul was fired last week. Shillinglaw, the Blue Hens' coach since the 1970s, retired at the end of the season.
