Georgetown’s year-end turnaround continued to gain steam as the Hoyas beat Penn 13-12 in double overtime to earn its first NCAA tournament victory since 2014.
A loss to Marquette in the final game of the regular season had Georgetown sitting at 9-8 with little prospect of making the NCAA tournament.
However, in the Big East tournament, the Hoyas avenged the loss to Marquette in the semifinal round and then upset Denver in the league championship game to earn the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament.
The Hoyas made it count as Taylor Gebhardt poured in seven goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime against a Penn team that had beaten it by a goal during the regular season.
That sets up a meeting with Georgetown’s old Big East rival, Syracuse, on Sunday. The two schools haven’t played since the 2013 season.
Gebhardt was the headliner, scoring three straight goals in the second half to turn an 11-9 deficit into a brief 12-11 lead before Penn’s Zoe Belodeau tied the score with 2:39 remaining.
In the overtime periods, Penn had several chances, but Georgetown goalie Haelle Chomo made four of her 10 saves in overtime, giving the Hoyas the chance to set up the game-winner by Gebhardt.
Francesca Whitehurst, who had a team-high three assists in the game, had the helper on Gebhardt’s game-winner and Michaela Bruno added a hat trick for Georgetown.
Elyse Decker scored five times for Penn, Gabby Rosenzweig had six assists and Belodeau had three goals and two assists. Krissy Kowalski, who came on in relief of Penn starting goalie Mikaila Cheeseman, made seven saves while allowing seven goals. Penn finishes the season at 12-6.
