Legendary high school boys’ lacrosse coach Tom Duquette is retiring after 42 seasons, the last 38 of which have come at Norfolk Academy in Virginia, the school announced Thursday.

Duquette, whose 559 wins rank 10th all-time among high school coaches nationally, was a National Lacrosse Hall of Fame player whose excellence carried over to his role on the sideline.

A four-time All-American attackman at Virginia (1970-73) and 1974 U.S. team member, Duquette started his coaching career at St. Anne’s-Belfield (Va.) and took over at Norfolk Academy in 1981. He’s the math department chair at the school.

Chesapeake Bayhawks midfielder Ryan Tucker, who like Duquette is a graduate of Gilman (Md.) and UVA, will take over as the boys’ lacrosse coach at Norfolk Academy. Tucker, who teaches eighth-grade history at the school and previously served as Duquette’s assistant coach, played on the gold medal-winning 2012 U.S. under-19 men’s national team. Duquette was on the coaching staff.

Tucker is the son of Johns Hopkins women’s lacrosse coach Janine Tucker and National Lacrosse Hall of Fame member John Tucker.

Duquette’s Norfolk Academy teams won seven state championships and produced more than 120 players who went on to play in college. Four Duquette disciples became professional lacrosse players and three have played on U.S. national teams.
