National power Culver Academy (Ind.) reloaded after losing a deep class to remain atop the Midwest Region Top 10 heading into the spring.
Loyola Academy (Ill.) and Dublin Jerome (Ohio) are tops in their respective states thanks to strong returning casts, but Upper Arlington (Ohio) won’t be overlooked. Brother Rice and Hartland are Michigan’s best and figure to meet again in the finals.
New Trier (Ill.) looks to advance further to the state final this year, while East Grand Rapids (Mich.) and Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.) have the pieces to defend their state crowns, though Brighton (Mich.) is strong competition for EGR.
1. CULVER ACADEMY (IND.)
Graduation hit the Eagles hard, including the departure of Midwest Player of the Year Ty English (46 goals, 35 assists, 67 ground balls), faceoff maestro Alec Vaccaro and another key scorer in Braeden Saris. That said, Culver has a deep pool of talent to dip into, per usual, including Penn-bound Griffin Scane (who had four goals and two assists against IMG last year) and Army commit Haydn Sommer. Also watch for sophomores Sean Grogan, Aidan McDonald and Luke Warrington.
2. LOYOLA ACADEMY (ILL.)
With 11 returning starters, including a large number of college commits, the Ramblers are poised to give a spirited defense of their state title. Loyola Academy’s attack should be particularly loaded, including Notre Dame commit Will Maheras (58 goals, 22 assists), Hobart commit Connor DiTomasso (69 goals) and Denver commit Cheyne Repp. St. Mary’s commit Klaus Anger is key at the X.
3. DUBLIN JEROME (OHIO)
While the Celtics lost some significant scoring from a season ago, they return talent all over the field, including Chase and Marek Tzagournis, both of whom are Denver commits — with the latter surpassing 150 points as a sophomore. Tack on faceoff specialist Brady Sestili, a pair of all-state defenders and Army commit Brady White in net and Dublin Jerome should be solid at every level.
4. UPPER ARLINGTON (OHIO)
The Golden Bears have to replace keeper Mac Scholl and faceoff whiz Shea Keethler, but they return plenty of scoring pop, led by Richmond commit Chris Mazzaferri (46 goals, 27 assists) and Sam Burns (Ohio State). Leading defender Chris Reynolds (Bellarmine) should steady things on the other end of the field.
5. BROTHER RICE (MICH.)
The Warriors graduated last year’s state title game hero Luke Dudley and keepers Tommy Kunz and Nate Randall but remain the team to beat in the Mitten State. Brother Rice is particularly talented in the midfield, led by senior Paulie Fortino (Penn) and junior Ben Eck.
