Ally Mastroianni walks Planet Earth as a star midfielder, gobbling up draw controls and scoring goals for the North Carolina Tar Heels and the U.S. women’s national team.

In the dream world Planet Drool, however, she’s known as Shark Girl. A descendant of Shark Boy and Lava Girl, who famously took down Mr. Electric with the help of the Ice Princess,  Mastroianni found her calling for helping those around her while she grew up Bridgewater, New Jersey. As her lacrosse career blossomed, she spent her free time writing and dreaming of one day being a superhero. All she wanted to do was make the world — real or in her dreams — a better place.

Inspired by the 2005 “documentary” on Shark Boy and Lava Girl, Mastroianni began dreaming up her place on a planet that featured rushing waters and high mountain tops. As soon as she’d shut her eyes and fall asleep, Shark Girl was transported to Planet Drool. Citizens need only look into the water for her Carolina Blue fin, which grew from the shark collagen she had wrapped around her sciatic nerve following a gnarly lacrosse injury, to find Shark Girl.

Mastroianni, meanwhile, has become one of the best players in the nation. However, she stills finds time to give back — helping children with intellectual disabilities through Gigi’s Playhouse and getting teammates involved.

Still, even after a long day of practice or a big game, she occasionally visits Planet Drool in her dreams, where she’s greeted as a hero. From Lava Girl’s Volcano all the way down to the Dream Lair, Shark Girl knows she’s found a second home on Planet Drool.
