The newly founded Dallas Rattlers made its first roster transactions on Friday, picking up two of the franchise’s biggest names. Goalie John Galloway and defenseman Joel White, both MLL All-Stars and U.S. national training team members, joined the team for the the 2018 season.
Both Galloway and White filed for Player Movement this offseason, but rejoin the team where they’ve starred together for the past six seasons.
The moves come after the former Rochester Rattlers announced it would be relocating to Dallas and playing its home games at the Star in Frisco, Texas. Along with the franchise’s impending move, former Rochester coach Tim Soudan stepped down from his position and assistant Billy Warder took over as head coach.
With the potential for a relocation, a number of Rattlers players filed for Player Movement after the 2017 season. Many cast doubt whether the core which included Galloway, White, Ned Crotty, Mike Manley and Jordan Wolf would remain intact. With Friday’s signings, Crotty, Manley, Jeremy Boltus, John Lade, Jordan MacIntosh and John Ranagan still have the potential to sign with another team before Dec. 8.
“I was lucky enough to get drafted to Rochester out of college, and there isn't a team in the league or a coaching staff I would rather play for,” Galloway said after news broke that the team was moving to Dallas.
The Rattlers will welcome back Galloway, who went 8-5 last season with a .547 save percentage. He also lead the league in goals against average (11.57) per 10 starts. He was chosen by the Rattlers in the 2011 MLL Draft and has made three All-Star teams (2014-16) and led the entire league in GAA in 2014 and 2016.
White, who also spends time with the NLL’s Georgia Swarm, went second overall to the Rattlers in the 2011 Draft. He made the top 10 in ground balls for five straight seasons (2012-16) and made the All-Star Game in the same years as his teammate. He has 52 points and 434 groundballs in 78 career games with the Rattlers.
