On a Maryland team that entered the spring season with a bevy of good offensive options but truly no clear-cut No. 1, sophomore Hannah Leubecker appears to be carving out that role for herself.

On Friday afternoon, the attacker from Forest Hill (Md.) switched her stick from left to right and dodged, unleashing a sidearm whip from just inside the eight-meter arc, sending the No. 9 Terps home with a 9-8 overtime win over host Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field.

It was Leubecker’s fourth of the game. Two weekends ago — the last time Maryland took the field — Leubecker combined to score 10 goals in a weekend doubleheader against Michigan.

Maryland (3-1) only held leads as large as two goals three times, with the final coming when Hannah Warther scored unassisted with 10:57 remaining in regulation. Hopkins (2-4) immediately answered, as Mackenzie Heldberg fed Shelby Harrison just 59 seconds later, cutting the deficit to one goal.

Nearly four minutes went by before Hopkins tied it. Harrison assisted Aurora Cordingley, who was recently named to the first Tewaaraton Award Watch List, to tie the score with 6:09 left.

Lizzie Colson won the opening draw of overtime for Maryland, and 58 seconds into the possession, Catie May fired a shot on goal that was saved by Kathleen Garvey. That turned into a possession for the Blue Jays, and Abbey Hurlbrink subsequently found herself on the eight-meter arc with 4:05 to play.

Her shot went high, giving Maryland the ball. That proved to be the final possession of the game, as Leubecker buried the winner.
