The Pac-12 is particularly interesting this year, and San Diego State just added to the excitement.

The Aztecs, on the road in SoCal against USC Friday afternoon, defeated the Women of Troy for the first time in program history, ending a streak of 10 straight losses against one of the best programs in the Pac-12’s young history.

Bailey Brown netted the winner in overtime, highlighting a momentous run that saw the Aztecs score the final three goals of regulation to force the extra period.

After Lexi Tan tied the score at 7 for San Diego State (4-6), USC went on a 5-0 between the end of the first half and the first four-plus minutes of the second half. Kelsey Huff’s score put the Women of Troy ahead 12-7 with 25:47 to play.

Instead of getting stuck in the doldrums of another loss to their conference rival, San Diego State awakened. Emily Resnick, Tan and Caitlin Jones all scored in a 3-0 run that cut the deficit to 12-10, and after Shelby Tilton scored to give USC a three-goal lead, the Aztecs clutched up.

Courtney Robinson scored a player-up goal with 13:07 remaining, putting the Aztecs down 13-11. Then it was Jones who scored with 9:33 remaining, followed by Tan’s goal on a Resnick assist that tied the score with 5:38 left in regulation.

Resnick led all players with six points (three goals), while Jones, Brown and Tan all recorded three goals and one assist.

The Aztecs overcame an incredible game from USC draw specialist Maddie McDaniel, who won 16 draws as USC (7-5) dominated the draw battle 25-4.

Bea Behrins Wins it in Triple OT

In a key Big East battle between Denver and UConn, it was the Pioneers who walked away victorious. Luckily for the Huskies, they get a chance for revenge at home in Storrs, Conn., on Sunday.

Bea Behrins’ fifth goal of the game was the biggest one, an unassisted winner in triple-overtime that gave the Pios a 14-13 win. Kailey Conry, Kayla DeRose and Julia Gilbert each scored twice for Denver (7-1, 5-0 Big East).

UConn (8-3, 4-1 Big East) led 7-6 at halftime, but Denver steadily began to separate. Julia Gilbert and Eliza Radochonski scored consecutive goals five minutes apart to give Denver a 10-7 lead, and the sides traded goals until Mackenzie Wallevand made the score 13-10 in favor of the Pios with 8:06 left.

Sydney Watson then bookended a 3-0 run that ended regulation, as UConn managed to come back and tie it. Watson’s goal with 47 seconds remaining forced the overtime periods.

Watson and Lia LaPrise were unstoppable, as the former scored five goals with 10 draw controls and the latter notched one goal and seven assists. Grace Coon scored four times. UConn goalie Landyn White made 18 saves.
