Malvern Prep (Pa.) has jumped into the top 10 of the Nike / US Lacrosse High School Boys’ National Top 25.

To open a 3-0 week, Malvern Prep defeated Springside Chestnut Hill (Pa.) 19-5. Eric Spanos had four goals and one assist, Colin McGill scored three goals, Will Peden had one goal and five assists, AJ Nikolic tallied three goals and one assist and Ennis Udo had two goals and three ground balls. Dylan Almonte was 6-for-10 on faceoffs.

The Friars then stopped Penn Charter (Pa.) 19-6 on Thursday, as Peden led with four goals and two assists, McGill finished with three goals and one assist, Nick Potemski had three goals and one assist, Sloan Zebrowski added a hat trick and Spanos had two goals and one assist.

In the most intriguing game of the week, Malvern pulled away from highly regarded Salesianum (Del.) 12-7 on for its 11th straight win. Spanos finished with four goals, Peden had two goals and four assists, McGill scored two goals and Sam Bevevino had three ground balls and two forced turnovers. The score was tied going into the fourth quarter before Malvern opened the gap.

Elsewhere in the Top 25, four new teams join the fray — Summit (N.J.), Don Bosco (N.J.), St. John’s College High (Md.) and Salesianum (Del.).

The Friars’ long-awaited return to the field included a season-opening 17-3 win over St. John the Baptist (N.Y.) and a 14-8 victory at Iona Prep (N.Y.). In the latter victory, Syracuse-bound junior Mike Leo had five goals, Duke commit Andrew McAdorey finishd with four goals and one assist, sophomores Jackson Greene and Pat Carragher contributed two goals apiece and sophomore Owen Duffy added one goal and two assists. 2. Chaminade (N.Y.), 2-0

The Flyers have raced out of the gate to start the season, defeating Kellenberg (N.Y.) 17-5 before collecting a 15-2 victory over Fordham Prep with Duke-bound junior Charles Balsamo and Notre Dame commit Will Lynch netting three goals each. That big rivalry matchup against St. Anthony’s was postponed due to inclement weather and has been moved to May 11. Previous: 2

3. Brunswick (Conn.), 8-1

The Bruins shook off their first loss of the season, a one-goal defeat to Lawrenceville School (N.J.), with a huge come-from-behind 9-8 overtime victory over Darien (Conn.) on Saturday. Brunswick erased a 7-3 deficit to win it 33 seconds into the extra session on Princeton commit Coulter Mackesy’s third goal of the game. Sophomore Leo Hoffman scored a pair of goals, sophomore Tomas Delgado had a goal and one assist and junior Myles Speiss, Syracuse commit Blake Burchill and Will Donovan (Notre Dame) each added a goal. 4. Darien (Conn.), 5-1

Goalie Andy Demopoulos (Brown) made an impressive 18 saves, but it still wasn’t enough in a 9-8 loss to Brunswick. Brady Pokorny had four goals, Jamison Moore (Princeton) struck twice and Finn Pokorny (Richmond) and Matthew Minicus (Loyola) each tallied one goal and one assist. The Blue Wave’s first defeat of the season came on the heels of a 10-7 win at Staples (Conn.). Previous: 4

The Dan Stone coaching era at Victor is inching closer with the juniors from a year ago hungry to prove there’s no drop off for one of New York State’s most dominant programs. That includes midfielder Alex Seiler, a Clarkson commit, defender Michael Mitchko, attackman/midfielder Nick Benetti and attackman Liam Erwin. Those seniors get their first chance Wednesday against Hilton (N.Y.). Previous: 5

6. Manhasset (N.Y.), 0-0

The highly anticipated return of the Woodstick Classic, an annual clash against Garden City (N.Y.) since 1935 that took a COVID-19 pause a year ago, is May 15, but first up, the Indians meet Roslyn (N.Y.) in their season opener Tuesday. Defensively, Manhasset will be anchored by Georgetown commit Jake Tolentino, who can play both close defense and long-stick midfield, as well as Swarthmore-bound Henry Kolyer. Previous: 6

7. Shoreham-Wading River (N.Y.), 0-0

The UNC-bound Schwartz twins — Johnny and Tyler — already have made a name for themselves, as has defender Jake Wilson, who committed to rival Duke. But they are among a talented group to watch from SWR this year. The Wildcats will also be lead by Harvard-bound junior midfielder Francisco Cortes, sophomore attack Alec Gregorek and junior defender Jake Whitney (Siena). Their first contest of a 14-game regular season is Wednesday under the lights against Half Hollow Hills West (N.Y.). Previous: 7

8. Massapequa (N.Y.), 0-0

Previous incarnations of the Chiefs put up huge numbers offensively — and that’s still a possibility for Tim Radomski’s squad with the likes of senior Jack Nichtern (Navy) and junior Anthony Mollica (Hofstra) leading the attack. Massapequa, which takes on Calhoun (N.Y.) on Tuesday for its first game since lifting the NYS Class A title in 2019, will be built on its defense, anchored by senior defenseman Ryan Durnin. 9. Ward Melville (N.Y.), 0-0

Will this be a vintage Ward Melville team? Another New York State powerhouse? Those answers will start to take shape when the Patriots open the 2021 season at home against Sachem East on Tuesday. Junior midfielders Tyler Ruffini, Kevin Dolan and Tyler Flynn look to make a big impact for the Patriots. Previous: 9

10. Garden City (N.Y.), 0-0 

When you’ve waited to play as long as the Trojans have, what’s another few days, right? Each team in Nassau County has a bye in an unbalanced 12-game regular-season schedule, and Garden City’s just happens to be on opening day. Steve Finnell’s squad features many standouts on the undefeated football team, including senior midfielder Pierce Archer, junior defenseman Brendan Staub, senior FOGO Jack Cascaddan, sophomore midfielder Stevie Finnell and sophomore defender Cole Webber. The Trojans meet Port Washington on Friday. Previous: 10

1. Gonzaga (D.C.), 1-0  

The Purple Eagles did not play this week but face a big week ahead. They will play at Paul VI (Va.) on Wednesday and then host The Heights (Md.) on Friday as they look to stay unbeaten. Previous: 1

2. McDonogh (Md.), 8-0           

McDonogh (Md.) defeated Loyola Blakefield 13-8 in a suspended game that was resumed April 27. McCabe Millon registerd three goals and five assists, Jack Horrigan scored five goals, Dante Trader had a hat trick and Hugh Brown scored two goals. Anthony Wilson made 10 saves. On Friday, Millon led the way with three goals and three assists in a 12-5 win over St. Paul’s (Md.). Luke Miller had two goals and one assist, and Trader, Brown and Horrigan scored two goals apiece. 3. Georgetown Prep (D.C.), 4-1

The Hoyas swept a pair of games against Landon last week, beginning with a 11-5 decision on Thursday. Will Angrick scored a hat trick, while Colin Burns, Dylan Hsu and Patrick Fitzgerald had two goals each, and Zach Whittier and Michael Ridgway chipped in one goal apiece. In a 10-9 win on Saturday, Mac Christmas had the game-winning goal with less than 2:00 left in the contest. Angrick led with five goals, Hsu added a pair of goals, Whittier tallied one goal and four assists and Burns chipped in a goal. 5. Bullis (D.C.), 5-2       

The Bulldogs split a pair of games with St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes last week, winning the first one 13-7 on Thursday. Chase Band led with four goals, Lucas Hilsenrath had two goals and one assist, Connor Davis added one goal and two assists, Spencer Hughes chipped in a pair of goals and Ben Jose, Kieran Anzelone and Maliik Wood had one goal and one assist apiece. Bullis lost 9-8 to SSSA in the rematch on Saturday. Tucker Wade led with three goals and one assist. Hilsenrath scored two goals, and Anzelone had one goal and one assist. Wade scored two goals in the final three-plus minutes to cut a three-goal deficit down to one with 48 seconds left, but after a timeout, Bullis’ final shot was blocked. Previous: 4

6. St. Mary’s (Md.), 5-1

St. Mary’s defeated Mount St. Joseph 10-4 on Wednesday. Tyler Barnett scored four goals, Will Hopkins had two goals and two assists, Erik Chick added a pair of goals and Nick Golini had a goal and one assist. Teddy Androus won 9 of 17 faceoffs to go with one goal. The Saints held off Gilman for a 7-6 win on Friday. Golini scored three goals, Will Hopkins had one goal and one assist and Owen Barcus, Will Brimhall and Dom Rafter each added one goal. Wes Schmidt made four saves. With the win, St. Mary’s moved to second place in the MIAA A Conference. Previous: 7

7. Summit (N.J.), 5-0

Summit earned an 8-7 double overtime win over previously unbeaten Seton Hall Prep (N.J.) on Saturday. Hunter Schulter scored with under a minute to go in the second overtime to end it. Seton Hall Prep was coming off a 12-5 win over previous No. 5 Delbarton. Summit trailed 7-3 in the fourth quarter before rallying. Schulter finished with three goals and one assist, while Michael Bonomo added two goals and Dylan Sebastian had one goal and one assist. Will O’Connell came up with seven saves. In a 12-3 win over Montclair on April 27, Bonomo led with five goals and one assist. Luke DiNola had one goal and three assists, and Jimmy Persche added one goal and one assist. 8. Archbishop Spalding (Md.), 7-2

Spalding lost 9-8 to a re-energized Loyola Blakefield (Md.) team on Friday. Michael Weisshaar and Josh Tang had two goals apiece, and Race Ripley, Ryan Schrier and Finn Kelly had one goal apiece. Spalding never led. Previous: 8

9. Boys' Latin (Md.), 5-2           

The Lakers defeated Severn 13-5 on April 27. Dom Pietramala led with three goals and one assist, while Ben Smith added three assists and Garrett Glatz, Hopper Zappitello and Ryan Spilman each scored two goals. Jackson Walsh chipped in one goal and one assist, Mac Moreland had six ground balls and Edward Lloyd and John Maranto contributed four ground balls apiece. Boys’ Latin beat Calvert Hall 10-8 on Friday. Pietramala finished with four goals and three assists, Zappitello and Smith each scored two goals, Walsh had one goal and two assists and Glatz added one goal. Previous: 10

10. Don Bosco (N.J.), 5-0

The Ironmen have made things look easy despite playing some of the top teams in New Jersey in the early going. No one has stayed within six goals of them. Bosco thrashed previously unbeaten Ridgewood 15-4 on Saturday to stay perfect. Robert Simone won 15 of 19 faceoffs, Brandon Stuart had four goals and two assists, Koleton Marquis contributed three goals and three assists and Mason Carfello tallied one goal and four assists. Michael Amoruso had four ground balls, and Kai Dimaculangan made six saves. The Ironmen jumped all over Bergen Catholic (N.J.) in a 12-3 win. Connor Gorman finished with two goals and three assists, Carfello had a hat trick and two assists, Marquis added two goals and one assist and Max Thomas scored two goals. 1. Dallas Jesuit (Texas), 10-2

The Rangers advanced to the state final four after defeating Lake Travis (Texas) 5-3 in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Sam Teachout and Cameron Martin each scored a pair of goals in the victory. Jesuit faces Episcopal Dallas in the state semifinals. The two squads met on April 24 with the Rangers winning 11-4. Previous: 1

2. Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.), 17-0

The Crusaders completed an unbeaten season with a state title on March 26, defeating Hough (N.C.) 14-5. Bryce Wojnovich, a Jacksonville recruit, was named the state championship MVP for his five-goal performance. Junior Caden Zadell led Cardinal Gibbons with 42 goals this season. Previous: 2

3. Highland Park (Texas), 13-2

The Highlanders picked up an 18-0 victory in the state quarterfinals against Allen (Texas). Thomas Mencke, George Wright and Harrison Key all had hat tricks to key the playoff win. Highland Park faces Woodlands (Texas) for a spot in the state championship game. Previous: 3

4. Blessed Trinity (Ga.), 18-0

The Titans are four wins away from a state title after blanking Effingham County (Ga.) 15-0. Blessed Trinity (Ga.) continues its playoff run against McIntosh (Ga.). Previous: 4

5. St. Andrew’s (Fla.), 14-0

The Scots won a regional title on Friday by defeating Belen Jesuit (Fla.) 14-4. Senior Will Adams led the way with four goals. St. Andrew’s faces Canterbury (Fla.) on Friday for a bid into the Class 1A state title game. Previous: 5

6. Ponte Vedra (Fla.), 15-1

The Sharks’ season concluded in a shocking overtime playoff loss to Creekside (Fla.). Maddox Johnson led Ponte Vedra with 49 goals, while Jack Reed led the squad in assists with 20. Previous: 6

7. Middle Creek (N.C.), 12-1

The Mustangs’ season came to an end March 17, losing to eventual state champion Cardinal Gibbons 12-7. Eight Mustangs tallied double figures in goals this year, led by junior Tate Jones, who had 36. Charlie Riesett won more than 90 percent of faceoffs. Previous: 7

8. Jupiter (Fla.), 16-1

The Warriors held off a late rally by St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) for an 8-7 victory to claim a regional title. While leading scorer Max Sanderson was held without a goal, Max Silver, Trace Hogan and Jackson Bashaw stepped up with multi-goal contributions. Jupiter faces Plant (Fla.) in the Class 2A state semifinals on Friday. Previous: 8

9. Lassiter (Ga.), 16-3

Andrew Atchison’s five-goal performance helped the Trojans to a 16-11 victory over North Gwinnett (Ga.) on Thursday. Bryce Horton contributed a hat trick. Lassiter faces Milton (Ga.) on Tuesday. Previous: 9

10. Louisville St. Xavier (Ky.), 12-3

The Tigers concluded the regular season with a 24-8 win over Eastern (Ky.) on Wednesday. St. Xavier opens state tournament action on Tuesday against Male (Ky.). Previous: 10

Midwest Top 10

1. Culver Academy (Ind.), 11-1

The Eagles were off this week but have huge games coming up against St. Xavier (Ohio) and IMG Academy (Fla.). The former is .500 (against a loaded schedule), while the latter is undefeated. Previous: 1

2. New Trier (Ill.), 6-0

The Trevians had a great week, starting with turning a 4-2 game at the half against Glenbard West (Ill.) into a healthier lead, thanks to an 11-1 second half. John Babnik had an especially strong week with three hat tricks in three games, including six goals in a 14-8 win against St. Viator and five in the 15-3 win against Glenbard West. Previous: 2

3. Loyola Academy (Ill.), 2-0

The Ramblers have had no problem finding the back of the net to start the season, averaging 20 goals in their first two games. They likely will be heavily favored in every game for a while, though 5-1 Libertyville (Ill.) is off to a solid start as its May 10 date with Loyola nears. Previous: 3

4. Upper Arlington (Ohio), 13-1

The Golden Bears continued to impress with two victories over top-notch foes in St. Ignatius (Ohio) and Brother Rice (Mich.). In the latter, Chris Mazzaferi had a hat trick, Shea Keethler went 19 of 20 from the X and Mac Scholl had an astounding 25 saves. Previous: 6

5. East Grand Rapids (Mich.), 10-0

The Pioneers have a knack for picking up close wins, with Thursday’s overtime victory over Forest Hills Eastern (Mich.) marking their third one-goal win of the season. Previous: 4

6. Brother Rice (Mich.), 8-2

The Warriors absorbed their second loss of the season Saturday, falling to Upper Arlington (Ohio). That was in spite of a hat trick from Connor Borkowicz. Previous: 5

7. Hudson (Ohio), 13-0

The Explorers had a particularly solid week on the defensive end, allowing just 13 goals over three victories. A fun week lies ahead for Hudson, which faces a battle with a very good St. Ignatius team Wednesday before hosting the Midwest Lacrosse Tournament this weekend. Previous: 7

8. Dublin Jerome (Ohio), 13-1

The Celtics continue to score at a torrid pace, averaging 20 goals in three in-state wins over Olentangy Berlin, St. Charles Prep and Dublin Coffman this past week. The Celtics will be among the teams making the trip to Hudson this weekend for that Midwest Lacrosse Tournament. Previous: 8

9. Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.), 9-2

After defeating Noblesville 16-3, the Royals highlighted their week with a big win over rival Cathedral. While the offense was certainly good, with EJ Reichert scoring five goals and Michael Matheny and Michael Mattaliano adding hat tricks, coach Scott Beesley was equally pleased with his defense, including six ground balls apiece for Blaine Wertz and Evan Wang. 10. Benilde-St. Margaret’s (Minn.), 5-0

The Red Knights’ impressive start to the season includes a 13-6 win over Prior Lake (Minn.) on Saturday, sparked by five goals from Matthew Dowden and seven assists from Carsen Brandt. That set the stage to a battle of undefeated teams Tuesday at Chanhassen. Previous: NR

1. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 4-0

The Wildcats added two more wins last week, beating Serra San Mateo (Calif.) 20-5 and Redwood (Calif.) 18-4. They play three games this week, capped by a highly anticipated matchup Saturday with No. 2 Torrey Pines (Calif.) that could settle the debate over the No. 1 ranking. Previous: 1

2. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 3-0

Dewey Egan’s four goals and three assists helped Torrey Pines to a big 15-4 win over previously unbeaten Cathedral Catholic (Calif.) on Saturday. Seniors Griffin Crawford and Christian Lerose each added five points. The Falcons are on the road against Corona del Mar (Calif.) and San Marcos (Calif.) this week before the big matchup with St. Ignatius Prep. Previous: 2

3. Regis Jesuit (Colo.), 0-0

The Raiders open their season Tuesday at Castle View (Colo.). Regis Jesuit especially is strong at the close defense and attack positions, but the key lies in the midfield development. Top returning players including senior attackmen Jack Ringhofer and Will McFadden, senior long-stick middie Adam Zdanovicz, senior midfielder Jack Egan and sophomore defender Jack Casey. Previous: 3

4. St. Margaret’s Episcopal (Calif.), 9-1

Matt Groeninger scored four goals and Riley Chester added three to lead the Tartans past Yorba Linda (Calif.) 10-1 on April 27. Owen Binger (two goals) and Will Stahl (one goal, two assists) rounded out the scoring, as St. Margaret’s tested Yorba Linda’s goalkeeper with 43 shots. Sebastien Chicas made eight saves, and Bobby Springer won 8 of 13 faceoffs. Previous: 4

5. Corner Canyon (Utah), 15-0

Senior Mason Quick and sophomore Blake Frankowiak tallied four goals and three assists as the Chargers beat Lone Peak (Utah) 19-8 on Thursday. Jon King also had four goals with one assist, and Ayden Santi made nine saves in three quarters of action. Corner Canyon also added a 17-3 win over Westlake (Utah) last week. Previous: 5

6. Loyola Los Angeles (Calif.), 9-1

Aiden Lee tallied six goals, Owen Gaffney had four and Trent Turner added a hat trick as the Cubs blanked Chaminade Prep (Calif.) 23-0 on Saturday. They also beat Crespi (Calif.) 13-5 last week after leading by as many as 11 goals in the second half. Previous: 6

7. Mater Dei (Calif.), 10-1

The Monarchs beat Santa Margarita (Calif.) 14-1 in a Trinity League matchup Wednesday behind a balanced scoring attack that included four goals from Triston Jewell and two each from Tommy Bethel and Grant Portillo, who also added three assists. Nick Colignon made 14 saves, and Lucas de la Paz was dominant on faceoffs, winning 14 of 18 attempts. Previous: 7

8. Jesuit Portland (Ore.), 5-0

The Crusaders beat Lakeridge (Ore.) 11-5 on Saturday behind a strong game from senior captain Coulter Bordonaro, a Babson College commit who led the team with four goals, two assists, two ground balls and one caused turnover. Benton Wimmer (Albany) had two goals and two assists, Aidan Conrad tallied two goals and one assist and Matthew Rincon (Binghamton) added two goals. Reese Sulivan (Colorado Mesa) made 14 saves. Three games remain on the schedule, including two this week against Beaverton (Ore.) and Sherwood (Ore.). Previous: 8

9. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 0-0

The Bruins open against Columbine (Colo.) on Thursday, and a date with Regis Jesuit looms next week. Cherry Creek, the 2019 state champs, would have returned seven starters and 25 of 36 players from that squad last year, but only four of those return after 21 seniors graduated in 2020. Senior attackman/midfielder Dakota Johnson and junior faceoff specialist Sawyer Brewer lead a group that will look to improve as the season progresses. Previous: 10

10. San Ramon Valley (Calif.), 2-0

The Wolves are back in after finally playing a couple games, including Thursday’s 19-6 win over Tamalpais (Calif.). Charlie Tagliaferri and Charlie Iler both had six goals and three assists to lead SRV, which was 5-1 last year with an overtime loss to St. Ignatius before the pandemic shut down the season.
