That doesn’t mean they lack outside support. Immediately after the team watched the NCAA tournament selection show Sunday night — socially distanced on the courts inside the college’s new 10,000-square-foot BRAC Recreation and Fitness Facility — first-team All-NEWMAC junior defenseman Drew Thomas received texts from three alums saying, “Go beat Tufts.”
“It really instilled some confidence that we have a lot of people backing us,” Thomas said.
It’s also not a rare occurrence. “The alumni connection is constant,” Price said.
When Batty arrived on Babson’s campus in the summer of 2018, the first person he met was former co-captain and four-year starter Glenn Ricciardelli from the class of 1979.
“All we care about is that you guys play hard,” Ricciardelli told him.
“I made the mistake of promising they would,” Batty joked.
Now, when Batty talks to members of the Class of 1979 about the current team he hears a common refrain: “They’re hard-nosed. They play like us.”
“I love to hear that because they’re the backbone of our program,” he said.
Batty received a text earlier this week from an alum who watched the highlight video that included his speech before the NEWMAC championship referencing the date inside the back of the Beavers’ jerseys. He told Batty he teared up because he knew what it meant, but also that Batty looked like a “crazy person” because no one else had any idea.
That’s OK. When the Beavers put on the green and white tomorrow, they’ll know they’re playing not only for the guys next to them, but everyone that came before them.
The hope is that future teams will do the same when they see 1979 and 2021 inside their jerseys.
“Hopefully,” Batty said, “it’s a much shorter time between the next number.”
