Four lacrosse players were victims of a fatal car crash on Long Island on Montauk Highway Saturday night, according to multiple media reports.

James Farrell, the captain of the Penn men’s lacrosse team in 2018, Scranton alum Ryan Kiess and former Manhasset (N.Y.) player Michael Farrell died as a result of a head-on crash while taking an Uber. The driver, Farhan Zahid, was also killed.

Former Scranton lacrosse player Brianna Maglio is currently hospitalized and remains in critical condition.

The Farrell brothers and Kiess had been friends since they attended Manhasset High School. They, along with Maglio, attended a celebration at Kiess’ parents’ new beach home in Remsenburg on Saturday. After the festivities, the group decided to take an Uber to go dancing elsewhere on Long Island.

"This is an unthinkable tragedy both personally and professionally for me," Manhasset Secondary School Principal Dean Schlanger said in a statement published by ABC7 News. "I had the pleasure of knowing Michael, James and Ryan, as well as their families, while students from 7th-12th grades and beyond. These boys come from beloved families who are extremely connected and valued members of our community. All three of them were fun, bright and well-rounded gentlemen both on and off the playing field and will leave a profound and positive impact on our school community. I am truly saddened over their losses and send my most sincere condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones."

Farrell played four years at Penn, ultimately leading the Quakers as a captain during the 2018 season. His brother, Michael, played at Manhasset. Kiess played three seasons at Scranton as a defenseman.
