Notre Dame announced Monday morning that defender Emma Schettig, a rising sophomore who starred on the defensive end for Maryland in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, is now a member of the Fighting Irish.

“I’m thrilled to announce the addition of Emma Schettig to our women’s lacrosse program,” Notre Dame coach Chris Halfpenny said. “After recruiting Emma in her freshman year of high school (when NCAA rules allowed early communication), we always thought she was a fantastic cultural fit for Notre Dame — academically, athletically and socially. Emma’s values align with that of our Gold Standards, as she is constantly in the pursuit of excellence, integrity and unity. Her experience as a full-time contributor in her freshman season at Maryland will no doubt help her to transition to our team’s style of play and the competitive ACC lacrosse schedule.”

Last year, Schettig earned two recognition as an Inside Lacrosse Second-Team All-American and a spot on the IL All-Rookie team.

The McDonogh (Md.) product secured a team-high 17 ground balls and nine caused turnovers while earning 16 draw controls in six games. She was the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after securing five ground balls and three caused turnovers against Syracuse on Feb. 29.

A member of the U19 women's national team, Schettig played alongside Notre Dame midfielder Kasey Choma last summer and won a gold medal. Schettig is also familiar with Notre Dame's Savannah Buchanan, playing one season with her at McDonogh. She played three seasons at McDonogh with Andie Aldave.
