Fifteen Division III men’s games — 14 NCAA second-round games and one third-round game — made for a busy day. Let’s go over all the results.
MIT NEVER TRAILS IN ONE-GOAL WIN
MIT’s historic season continues.
The Engineers scored the game’s first six goals but then went back-and-forth with Amherst in a 13-12 win. After Bayard Demallie tied the score at 10 for Amherst with 13:46 left in the contest, Gavin Vandenberg answered with the go-ahead goal. Ryan Gebhardt made it a 12-10 lead five minutes later.
PJ Clementi cut it to 12-11 before Eric Pence added another insurance goal for MIT. It was a much-needed score. Clementi added another with 20 seconds, and Amherst won the ensuing faceoff. Clementi took another rip as time expired, but Lukas Drexler-Bruce made a game-sealing save with no time left.
WESTERN NEW ENGLAND DOMINATES SECOND HALF
Lynchburg led by three at halftime, but a momentum-shifting third quarter flipped the advantage over to Western New England. The Golden Bears scored six of the seven goals of the period and then the final three goals of the game in a 14-10 win over the Hornets.
Jared Newall scored four times, Dylan Hanley had a hat trick and Matt Greer had three assists.
ST. LAWRENCE SURVIVES ON LATE SAVE
Josh Huiatt kickstarted a late three-goal run for St. Lawrence with under six minutes left in the fourth quarter, a much-needed run that lifted the Saints to a 15-14 win over SUNY Cortland.
Tied at 12 before Huiatt scored, St. Lawrence followed with two goals from Ben Murtagh for a 15-12 lead with 3:42 to play. SUNY Cortland cut the deficit to 15-14 with 1:33 left on Caden Yancey’s score, and the Red Dragons tried to tie the score with 18 seconds left, but William Helm secured the win with a save for St. Lawrence.
