1. The U.S. Heritage Cup roster was announced Tuesday.
It features seven players – Brett Manney, David Mather, Donny Moss, Chris O’Dougherty, Joe Resetarits, Blaze Riorden and Joel White – that helped the U.S. win bronze in the most recent Federation of International Lacrosse World Indoor Lacrosse Championship in 2015.
Other notable names include Paul Rabil, who returns after not playing in 2015 due to a foot injury, Tom Schreiber, the 2017 NLL Rookie of the Year, Rob Pannell, a 2014 All-World field lacrosse honoree, and Connor Fields, an Albany senior who spent the summer playing box lacrosse in Canada after being named a 2017 Tewaaraton finalist.
“This is just one of many opportunities we’ll have to evaluate what we have,” said U.S. head coach Regy Thorpe. “We’ve got a good mix of veterans and younger players.”
2. Brown women’s lacrosse posted a photo on Instagram of its players wearing new Cascade LX headgear, sparking conversations on social media. The Ivy League squad is the first Division I women’s lacrosse team to all wear the headgear during fall ball, which started Monday.
Tari Kandemiri, also known as @officiallaxgirl on Twitter, has been following all the recent changes in the women’s game and was one of the most consistent contributors to the buzz, examining all sides of the topic.
3. Akron announced Tuesday the intention to add women’s lacrosse and bring back baseball for the 2019-2020 academic year.
Both programs would be supported by a community-backed fundraising effort, described as a “novel” approach by the athletic department. The teams will implement an Ohio-focused student-athlete recruiting strategy, use existing facilities and maintain cost controls.
“After much discussion and planning, we believe that we have identified some creative ways to achieve our objectives while focusing on student-athletes from Ohio,” Akron president Matthew J. Wilson said. “Now, we hope that the community will come forward and assist the University in restoring baseball and adding women's lacrosse."
4. The NLL hosted its entry draft Monday night and five teams got all the available first-round talent, including forward Josh Byrne, who was selected first overall by the Buffalo Bandits.
League analyst Neil Stevens breaks down each team’s picks, taking a special look at the desire to increase the number of Americans in the NLL, especially by the New England Black Wolves.
5. Multi-sport athletes are “desirable” to college coaches, including Maryland women’s lacrosse coach Cathy Reese and Roanoke men’s lacrosse coach Bill Pilat. The myth that playing more lacrosse is better is quickly debunked.
6. Laurette Payette, a veteran women’s lacrosse official, will be inducted into this year’s National Lacrosse Hall of Fame as a “contributor” to the sport thanks to her servant leadership over the course of 35 years.
