Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. The Chesapeake Bayhawks have brought a local star home.
Steele Stanwick, a Baltimore native and former Tewaaraton Award winner at Virginia, returns to the area thanks to a trade with the Ohio Machine. The Bayhawks sent Ohio their second-round pick in the 2019 college draft in exchange for Stanwick, who's an assistant coach for the Johns Hopkins women's team.
Though Stanwick did not play in 2017, the move figures to bolster an already-loaded offense that led the league in scoring this season. He had been one of the league's best feeders in five seasons prior, following his two-time All-American career with the Cavaliers.
Time will tell if the acquisition up front can help the Bayhawks, who also led the league in goals allowed, return to the four-team league playoffs for the first time since winning the championship in 2013. They're currently searching for a full-time head coach, likely in advance of the MLL Supplemental Draft set for Friday, Dec. 8.
2. The Team USA Fall Classic this weekend boasts an impressive lineup that features the U.S. men's training team in two live-streamed games. US Lacrosse has announced that Team USA's 6 p.m. Saturday game against defending NCAA champion Maryland and its 2 p.m. Sunday game against semifinalist Towson will be streamed free of charge on the organization's website, YouTube channel and Facebook page.
Other games dotting the event lineup include a 9/11 Memorial Game involving first responders from Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Viriginia at 11:15 a.m. Sunday and an abbreviated scrimmage between the Tigers and Team Israel following the Team USA-Towson game.
Interesting approach to the event at Tierney Field in Sparks, Md., by Team USA coach John Danowski, who will split the training team into 23-man squads for each game. That's the roster limit for FIL men's championships.
“That's not something we're really used to,” Danowski said.
3. A former high school lacrosse player remains hospitalized after being shot twice during Sunday's attack at a country music festival in Las Vegas, according to various news and social media reports. Tyler Tracy, who played at Faith Lutheran (Nev.) from 2008-11 per his LinkedIn profile, took two bullets to the back while protecting his girlfriend during the attack, according to the “Tyler Tracy Medical Fund” GoFundMe page.
The Instagram and Twitter accounts of the Faith Lutheran boys' lacrosse team recirculated word of Tracy's injuries and GoFundMe page from one of his former coaches. KNTV-TV Channel 13 filed this video and print report on Tracy and two current Faith Lutheran students that were injured. The report includes a photo of Tracy giving a thumbs-up sign in his hospital bed.
Thoughts and prayers for Tracy's recovery and to all those affected by the tragedy.
