Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. Postseason action on a Tuesday.
Davis Lindsey tied his career highs with two goals, three assists and five points as Loyola bested Bucknell 11-7. A strong second-half performance on defense led the Greyhounds into the upcoming Patriot League semifinals.
In the other Patriot League quarterfinal, Lehigh received four goals and four assists from Tommy Schelling in a 14-8 win over Navy.
2. We named the USA Lacrosse Magazine Division I Players of the Week.
Notre Dame’s Pat Kavanagh put on his signature razzle-dazzle in an 18-11 win over Syracuse, tying his own program record with 10 points. More on his performance here.
The women’s player of the week is Lauren Figura of Saint Joseph’s. Figura posted 13 goals and two assists in the Atlantic 10 tournament, which culminated in the Hawks’ first-ever conference title. More on her stellar week here.
3. The 138th Woodstick Classic truly was a classic.
Garden City’s overtime win over Manhasset (N.Y.) allowed the Trojans to hoist the prestigious trophy, but it also saw them jump to No. 16 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse High School Boys’ National Top 25.
Massapequa (N.Y.) and Iona Prep (N.Y.) were also knew to the Top 25 this week. See the full ranking here.
4. There’s a new No. 1 in high school girls’ lacrosse.
Glenelg Country (Md.) thoroughly dominated St. Paul’s (Md.) last week, unseating the former No. 1 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse High School Girls’ National Top 25. See the full ranking here.
5. Sam Cioffi, a junior attackman at Salem State, has died.
The school announced that Cioffi died of a medical emergency Sunday morning. On Friday night, Cioffi had set the program’s single-season goals record.
6. A coaching legend has called it a career.
Peter Lasagna has decided to retire after 22 years leading the men’s program at Bates. He won 134 games with Bates and led the Bobcats to nine appearances in the NESCAC tournament.
