Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. The Denver Outlaws became the first MLL team to score at least 20 goals in a game this season with a dominant 24-12 win over the Atlanta Blaze on July 4.
With just a two-goal lead 15 minutes in, the Outlaws used an eight-goal run in the second quarter to build a 15-5 cushion before ending the game on a high note with five straight goals in the fourth quarter.
Mike Bocklet led Denver with six goals, three of which came in the second quarter. He was named the Coca-Cola Player of the Game with a season-high eight points.
2. The Fourth of July set off fireworks in the lacrosse world. Here are some of the best social media posts from the day.
3. The U.S. women’s national team departs for England today. Co-captain Sarah Bullard sends her team off, authoring the first in a series of player blogs following the team at the 2017 Federation of International Lacrosse Women’s World Cup and the IWGA World Games later in Poland.
“On July 4, I am incredibly humbled and grateful that we will have the opportunity to represent our country for the next month playing the sport we love,” Bullard wrote.
Bullard, who was a member of the 2009 and 2013 world champion U.S. women’s national teams alongside co-captain Devon Wills, put the program’s tradition of winning into perspective as Team USA remains confident, but not satisfied, entering the World Cup.
“We need to create greatness out of our team,” Bullard said. “We can’t expect it to come just because it has in the past and we’ve had a great tradition of winning. That doesn’t mean it’s going to come naturally to us just because we’re wearing Team USA.”
4. This season’s high school wraps continues with the Midwest girls. It was a special year for the father-daughter duo of John and Brennan Dwyer at Loyola (Ill.). The senior earned Epoch/US Lacrosse Midwest Player of the Year honors.
The Times Colonist takes a look at the traditional lacrosse game played with wooden sticks to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary of the sport.
Ryan Brown, a Sykesville native who plays for the Charlotte Hounds, is becoming “a generational talent,” according to the Carroll County Times.
