Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. Tom Schreiber graced the cover of our January edition. Read about the many talents (and surprising modesty) of the Team USA midfielder, two-time MLL MVP and 2017 NLL Rookie of the Year.
“He’s the best player in the world right now, case closed,” says ESPN lacrosse analyst Paul Carcaterra.
His story dives into the best calendar year a pro player could ever have, spending roughly 40 weekends a year on the road, but also takes a look back at his youth playing days, reflecting with father and National Lacrosse Hall of Famer Doug Schreiber.
For the cover photo shoot, US Lacrosse Magazine met Tom Schreiber at his residence in Long Beach, N.Y., joined his father, Doug, at his childhood home in East Meadow, N.Y., and took to the field at the Mineola PAL complex for some shooting.
2. No. 14 Hofstra hopes to put its painful end to 2017 behind it after rising to No. 2 in the country only to fall to UMass in the CAA semifinals when the Minutemen scored on a 35-yard buzzer beater.
“It has to be used as a motivator,” Pride coach Seth Tierney said. “It’s disappointing the way it ended. We dug ourselves too big of a hole [against UMass], and that last play happened. Whether it should have been a goal or not, whatever it was, it happened.”
3. New faces in South Bend suggest a changing of the guard for No. 14 Notre Dame, which returns zero All-Americans for the first time in 14 years.
“We lost a lot of playmakers,” Irish coach Christine Halfpenny said. “But we have some kids who have been waiting for it to be their time.”
4. LaxCon returns to the Baltimore Convention Center this weekend. Take a look inside at the event, which will feature a new box arena and several first-time speakers, including Maryland championship coach John Tillman.
5. US Lacrosse’s Tierney Field will host more than 30 high school and college games from February through June. Check out the full schedule for 2018.
